Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia, Teten Masduki, delivered an oration at the Open Session of the 72nd Anniversary of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) online on Wednesday (02/02). In his speech, Teten Masduki wished the entire UI family a happy 72nd birthday. He hoped that UI with the vision of an entrepreneurial university could strengthen the relationship between education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.
This year, in line with the spirit of UI’s transformation to become an entrepreneurial university, the theme raised in UI’s 72nd Anniversary is UI Serving for National Independence. The dies natalis celebration is held in a hybrid manner, considering that we are currently still in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Nevertheless, UI Rector UI Chancellor, Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D said in the speech delivered, “The extraordinary dedication of UI residents and alumni in the form of real contributions to Indonesia, has become a ‘celebration’ of UI’s journey for more than seven decades.”
UI, which was originally a traditional mission university, is currently moving towards an entrepreneurial university. It is characterized by the connection between education, research with innovation, and entrepreneurship. The integral structure that connects the three elements is aimed at instilling a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in education and research. According to Teten, UI has a vision that is in line with the spirit and priorities of the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperative SMEs for 2022, namely increasing the ratio of Indonesian entrepreneurship, thereby creating new middle class jobs, increasing the number of small and medium enterprises so that the economic structure becomes more robust and the entrepreneurship ratio can reach 3. 95% in 2024.
As Minister of the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Teten invites Universitas Indonesia to strengthen collaboration as a bridge for MSMEs in innovating and adapting to technology, so that MSMEs can advance to class and become global. In addition, he also congratulated UI on its achievement in making a major contribution to innovation, patents and Indonesian entrepreneurship. Teten hopes that UI can give birth to reformers to realize the independence of the nation.
Along with the Anniversary, UI received good news that the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities placed it in the first position in Indonesia, and ranked 649 in the world. In the previous edition in July 2021, UI was ranked 729th in the world, and 9th in Southeast Asia.
“UI is the only Indonesian university that is ranked in the top ten in Southeast Asia. In the January 2022 edition, in addition to remaining in the top position in Indonesia, UI achieved a remarkable improvement by being ranked 649th in the world, which means that UI managed to climb 80 places compared to last year. UI has also managed to maintain its position at the 9th rank in Southeast Asia,” said Amelita Lusia MSi, Head of the UI Bureau of Public Relations and Public Information Disclosure.
If we look in more detail at each indicator, the UI Impact Rank rose by 77 ranks to 359 in the world, the UI Openness Rank remained at 761st in the world, and the UI Excellence Rank rose 73 places to 1177 in the world. This achievement in early 2022 was achieved thanks to UI’s success in meeting the Webometrics assessment requirements based on three indicators, namely visibility or web contents impact (with a weight of 50%) which is the number of external networks (
subnetsconnected to the institution’s web page (normalized and then the maximum value is selected); transparency or openness (with a weight of 10%) is the number of citations from the top 210 authors sourced from Google Scholar Profiles; and excellence or scholar (with a weight of 40%) is the number of scientific publication articles among the top 10% most cited from 27 disciplines with sources from Scimago.
The Webometrics ranking is carried out by the Cybermetric Lab which is a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain, on more than 31,000 Higher Education Institutions in the world. The Webometrics ranking system aims to promote Web publications, support Open Access initiatives, support electronic access to scientific publications, and other academic materials. In commemoration of this 72nd Anniversary, the UI Chancellor inaugurated the launch of the construction and redevelopment of the Universitas Indonesia Satellite Clinic on the Salemba Campus. In early 2020, UI began renovation and changed the function of the former Optoelectronics Building on the Salemba Campus to become a representative UI Salemba Satellite Clinic. With this Satellite Clinic, UI residents on the Salemba Campus can enjoy the best health services, including primary health facilities for education and research.
