Commemorating Eid Al-Adha 1443 H, UI Distributed 1,200 Packages of Meat

Ukhuwah Islamiyah Mosque of Universitas Indonesia (MUI UI) held a congregational Eid prayer and slaughtered sacrificial animals in commemoration of Eid Al-Adha 1443 Hijriah. The activity which took place at UI Depok Campus was held on 10-11 July 2022. The Eid al-Adha prayer was held on Sunday morning (10/7) with Ustaz Iryansyah, M.Ag., Al-Hafidz as the imam and UI Mosque Board of Trustees, Dr. Muhammad Luthfi Zuhdi, M.A., as the preacher. The slaughter of the sacrificial animal was held in the evening on the same day.

In his sermon, Dr. Luthfi conveyed the importance of emulating the attitude of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Muhammad in facing various life problems. Both prophets remained calm despite facing severe problems.

“What we learn from both is the need for firmness in the face of life’s trials. The higher one’s faith, does not guarantee the lighter the test. On the contrary, if someone has true faith, of course he is stronger even though the test is getting tougher. He is also trained to solve problems in a good way,” said Dr. Lutfi.

One of the examples of the prophet’s attitude is reflected in the sincerity of sacrifice. Although still in a pandemic situation, the UI academic community was moved to continue sharing with others.

In this year’s Eid al-Adha, MUI UI sacrificed 6 cows and 21 goats. These sacrificial animals were donated by lecturers, students, and the surrounding community. UI facilitates sacrificial animals at affordable prices, which are IDR 3,800,000/head for goats and IDR 26,500,000/head for cows. The price includes all operational costs, maintenance, distribution, and animal feed.

MUI UI applies the principles of Safe, Healthy, Excellent, and Halal (ASIH) for slaughtering so that sacrificial animals are hygienic, ergonomic, and fulfill basic sanitation. The slaughtering process also fulfills halal, veterinary public health, and animal welfare requirements so that the carcasses produced are safe, high quality, and nutritious for consumption. MUI UI collaborates with Juru Sembelih Halal (Juleha) who meet the standards of cleanliness, health, and in accordance with Islamic law.

The committee team sent boxes containing several containers of sacrificial meat to UPT Library representatives to be distributed to security guards, janitors, and other personnel on duty in the library area.

Head of the Organizing Committee for Qurban Kiwamuddin, S.Hum. said that the health of workers and animals is at the forefront of the implementation of Qurban. Before the slaughter began, the committee had invited a veterinarian to make sure the animal is healthy and fit for slaughter. After going through the slaughtering stage, the committee began to separate the meat into containers which of course were hygienic.

“We avoid using containers in the form of plastic bags because they are difficult to recycle, making them less environmentally friendly and unhygienic. The well-wrapped meat is then distributed to the beneficiaries,” said Kiwamuddin, who is also a Masters student at School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG) UI.

The beneficiaries include qurbani donors (entitled to receive 1/3); UI community including security guards, janitors, canteen keepers; and residents around UI Depok Campus. Kiwamuddin targeted three distribution locations, which are Balik Rel (Sawo road to Cengkeh road), Kukusan Teknik, and Pondok Cina. Of all the sacrificial animals slaughtered, 1,200 packages of meat were distributed.

“MUI UI finally held a live sacrifice for the first time after three years of being constrained by the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, MUI UI still sacrificed even though the slaughter was held in Bedahan Pondok Terong Village, Depok. We wish that MUI UI can continue to serve the community well through the execution of Qurban. This is clear evidence that MUI UI contributes to the community. Hopefully, this activity can strengthen brotherhood, strengthen diversity, and uphold tolerance,” said Kiwamuddin.
