The Integrated Creative Engineering Learning Laboratory (i-CELL) building of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) has won the second place in Subroto Award for Energy Efficiency (PSBE) in 2022 from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia (ESDM RI) for category – A Energy Efficient Building, New Building sub-category. The award was officially handed over by the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to FTUI, represented by Manager of Human Resources and Facilities of FTUI Dr. Ajib Setyo Arifin, S.T., M.T., at the PSBE Award 2022 event.
“Previously, on March 02, 2022, the i-CELL FTUI Building had achieved Green Building certification with the EDGE ADVANCED predicate from the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI). Based on the assistance of Green Building Consultant Yodaya Hijau Bestari, the i-CELL building managed to save 70.34% in the energy efficiency category. Not only has an advantage in the energy saving system, i-CELL FTUI also has advantages in the system of ventilation, vertical transportation, lighting, air temperature, water saving fixtures, clean water sources, solar power, and others in the New Building category. Thanks to these advantages, i-CELL FTUI has succeeded in fulfilling various PSBE assessment qualifications,” said Dean of FTUI Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU.
The i-CELL building is an integrated laboratory building designed with smart and green building technology that is eco-friendly and efficient in lighting energy management, air circulation, and technology application of rain water harvesting. This building also has a fairly large green area reaching 33.06% of the total building land area of 4154.11 m². The green area is an unstructured green area with the building underneath having ground cover such as large trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. The i-CELL building is a tangible proof of support for the world of education towards Net Zero Energy Building 2050.
The i-CELL’s high energy efficiency exceeds far from the minimum savings limit set by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of 20%. The building meets the basic concept of energy saving, by using solar photovoltaic (101 kWp capacity) for 21% of the total energy use. This energy can be utilized to reduce the use of conventional electrical energy in buildings.
Coordinator of the FTUI team for PSBE 2022 preparation and Head of the Regional and Urban Planning Masters Study Program Dr.-Ing. Ova Candra Dewi said that regarding other advantages of i-CELL FTUI, this building also reuses recycled materials in buildings and expands greenery in the building area which also reduces the impact of carbon emissions.
“Energy Consumption Intensity (IKE) in buildings reaches below the IKE standard recommended by Indonesian National Standard. The overall energy use of the i-CELL Building is 575,508 kWh/year with an estimated IKE of 130.38 kWh/m²/year (conditioned NLA: 4,414.06m³), this figure is far below the IKE standard for laboratory buildings, which is 180 kWh m²/year.” said dr. Ova.
The FTUI team consisted of Prof. Nandy Putra and Prof. Nasruddin from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Miktha Alkadri from the Department of Architecture, Mr. Djamal from Facility Management of FTUI, and several research teams in the field of building science and technology Tika Hanjani, Kartika Rahmasari, Amalia Ekasanti, Bagus Rangin, and Rizki Siregar.
“The i-CELL building is the only participant that is an educational facility. In this 2022 event, PSBE was attended by 191 participants who competed in three categories. The Energy Efficient Building category, with sub-categories of green building, new building, retrofitted building, tropical building, and special innovations; Energy Management in Industry and Building category, with sub-categories of small and medium buildings, large buildings, mining and energy industries, large manufacturing industries, small and medium manufacturing industries and special innovations; and the category of Energy Saving in Government Office Buildings which will be followed by Central and Regional Government Institutions and private parties. There are 9 buildings competing in the new building sub-category,” said Dr. Ajib.
PSBE is an activity organized by the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources since 2012, and this year it will be held on October 5, 2022. This event encourages efficient and responsible energy utilization, and supports the achievement of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target. The PSBE assessment includes overall building, active and passive design, maintenance and management, and environmental impact.
