Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf)/Tourism and Creative Economy Agency of the Republic of Indonesia Dr. H. Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, B.B.A., M.B.A., appreciated the implementation of cultural and artistic performances organized by students of the Tourism Business Management study program, Universitas Indonesia (UI) Vocational Education Program. The performance, entitled Tourism Day x UI Harbor 2023, highlighted Betawi culture by presenting various performances, such as Palang Pintu, Lenggang Nyai Dance, Pencak Silat, Yellow Sirih Dance, Betawi Lenong, and others.
“I hope that this activity will become a promotional medium as well as an introduction to Betawi culture for the wider community to support the development of potential and strengthen tourism promotion so that it is more optimal. Hopefully, this activity can further encourage collaboration in efforts to advance the tourism sector and creative economy in a sustainable manner, and have a positive impact on improving the economy and community welfare,” said Sandiaga. According to him, activities like this need to be appreciated as part of tourism awareness efforts. Moreover, the organizer is an educational institution that focuses on tourism education.
Tourism Day x UI Harbor is a collaborative program between Tourism Business Management students and the Tourism Student Association, with a different cultural theme every year. Head of the Tourism Business Management Study Program, Anisatul Auliya, SST.Par., M.Par., explained that this activity aims to train students’ abilities in managing an event before entering the industrial world.
Auliya said, “Betawi culture from DKI Jakarta province is the area closest to us. However, there are still many people who do not know it in depth. Through this activity, we want people to get to know Jakarta’s culture more closely.”
In activities held at the UI Vocational Auditorium, UI Depok Campus, students also opened various travel fair booths to sell tour packages to various regions in Indonesia, such as Aceh, Derawan Islands, Bali, Dieng, and other areas. The creation of the tour package is the result of coursework from students which can be purchased by the general public. This event is an implementation of various courses studied by students in odd semesters.
Meanwhile, Vice Director for Resources, Ventures and Vocational General Administration at UI, Priyanto, S.S., M.Hum., said that the activity held on Tuesday (5/12) was an implementation of the vocational curriculum which focuses on practice. “We hope that this activity will be sustainable and increase interest from the wider community and involve various stakeholders. Tourism Day x UI Harbor will also be a mainstay work program for UI Vocational students in introducing Indonesian culture,” said Priyanto.
