Expanding Collaboration in the Cyber ​​Security Sector, UI Collaborates with Japan’s Best Universities and Companies

UI opens opportunities for global collaboration in cybersecurity with the best universities and companies in Japan. Discussion was conducted during a visit by academics from the Faculty of Engineering UI, on January 25—30, 2024. UI team was represented by the Dean of Faculty of Engineering UI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, along with representatives from the Electrical Engineering Department, Dr.Eng. Ir. Arief Udhiarto, S.T., M.T., Dr. Ir. Muhammad Salman, and Dr. Ruki Harwahyu, S.T., M.T., M.Sc.

UI representatives visited Meiji University, Tokyo Denki University, Professional University of Information and Management for Innovation (i-University), Keio University, Yokohama National University, and the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT). During the visit, the latest cybersecurity advances were discussed. It aims to open opportunities for collaboration in academia, research, and downstream from Japan to Indonesia and vice versa.

According to Prof. Heri, cybersecurity is the main focus of collaboration because it is crucial for facing cybersecurity challenges in the digital era. “Initially, discussions were held to understand research activities, legal regulations, and cybersecurity learning approaches in Japan. We identified opportunities from the discussions to create a safe and resilient cyber environment for Indonesia,” he said.

Besides, they visited several leading companies in Japan operating in cyber security, including LAC Co., Ltd., Japan Cybersecurity Innovation Committee (JCIC), Japan Network Security Association (JNSA), JICA Headquarters, and Trend Micro Inc. The visit was to build holistic collaboration between academics and industry.

Prof. Heri said that this collaboration could expand global collaborations in education and develop cybersecurity technology. “Faculty of Engineering UI is committed to continue supporting the development of science and technology, especially in fundamental fields,” he said.

He hopes a better understanding of the current trends in the cybersecurity industry in Japan will be gained. Therefore, the mutually beneficial partnership involves exchanging knowledge, research, training, or joint observations can be made. UI seeks to increase its contribution to global developments in cybersecurity.

They also visited the head office of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In the courtesy meeting, UI and JICA representatives discussed several strategic issues, including the continuation of cooperation in developing cybersecurity human resources initiated in 2019. They established IdCARE as a center of excellence and initiative at the ASEAN level and beyond. IdCARE has supported the development of cybersecurity human resources in Indonesia and other countries, such as Timor Leste, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Mongolia, and Bhutan.
