University of Indonesia’s Response Regarding the Cancellation of UKT and IPI Increases

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia has issued press releases with Number 200/sipers/A6/V/2024 and Number 202/sipers/A6/V/2024 on May 27, 2024, then followed by a letter from the Director General of Higher Education, Research and Technology (Dirjen Diktiristek) to the Rectors of PTN and PTNBH with Number 0511/E/PR.07.04/2024 regarding the Cancellation of UKT and IPI Increases for the 2024/2025 Academic Year dated May 27, 2024. After the release of the press release and the letter of Cancellation of UKT and IPI Increase for Academic Year 2024/2025 from the Director General of Diktiristek, at this time Universitas Indonesia is taking quick steps to return to the process with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology cq Director General of Higher Education, Research and Technology to determine UKT and IPI Rates for Regular Class Undergraduate and Vocational Programs for Academic Year 2024/2025.

The steps to be taken refer to the Director General of Higher Education’s letter, namely that the Rector of PTN and PTNBH resubmit the UKT and IPI rates for the 2024/2025 academic year to the Director General of Higher Education no later than June 5, 2024. In addition, the provisions are that the submission is made without an increase in UKT and IPI compared to the 2023/2024 academic year and in accordance with the maximum limit provisions in the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Regulation Number 2 of 2024 concerning Higher Education Operational Cost Unit Standards at State Universities within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. After obtaining a recommendation letter or approval letter from the Director General of Higher Education on the re-submission of UKT and IPI, then the Rector of PTN and PTNBH can revise the Rector’s Decree regarding UKT and IPI rates for the 2024/2025 academic year. It is also emphasized that the Rector of PTN and PTNBH must ensure that no new students for the 2024/2025 academic year pay a higher UKT due to the revision of the Rector’s Decree.

Since the beginning of the process of forming and determining UKT and IPI, Universitas Indonesia has applied the principles of (1) complying with all regulations set by the government, in this case those issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture, both regarding the amount of tariffs and the mechanism / process of formation; (2) the highest class UKT tariff is not higher than the highest class UKT tariff in the 2023/2024 Academic Year; and (3) paying attention to and carefully considering the socio-economic conditions of students by examining and observing the realization of UKT in 2023/2024.

Things that we need to evaluate, revise, or consider as a follow-up to the Ministry of Education and Culture policy are currently being done. As soon as we get the results of this very dynamic process, we will certainly convey them to various interested parties, including the public. For all input, suggestions, complaints, submitted to the University of Indonesia, we express our gratitude. All of this is a form of public concern for UI and the students who are future leaders. The belief that education is an elevator that mobilizes a person to rise to a higher level, makes UI fully support prospective new students who have a strong intention to continue their education at UI. This commitment is realized by implementing mechanisms and being open to communicating with those who consider the determination of UKT classes for them to be inappropriate. Prospective students should not hesitate to ask questions and communicate with UI.
