In the Opening of the National Geographical Indications, Business Meeting, and Human Intellectual Property Appreciation Forum, held by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) on June 12, in Shangri-la Hotel, Jakarta, Minister of Law and Human Rights of Indonesia, Prof. Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly, S.H., M.Sc., Ph.D, commented on how intellectual property has become a hot topic in meetings and seminars of the last few years due to the potential it has as a gear of economic growth and national competitiveness.
Minister Yasonna stated that the intellectual property ecosystem requires further development through the collaboration of stakeholders. This ecosystem focuses on three elements, including the creative element (the creation of intellectual work), the protection element (the protection of intellectual property and law enforcement), and the utilization element (the commercialization of intellectual property).
“The creation of intellectual work has become a fundamental matter, keep innovating, keep creating. If we stop creating, then we stop progress and growth. It starts with an idea that will be poured into research. Research yields innovations for the purposes and benefit of mankind. Combined with economic production, this shall support the aim of Indonesia Emas 2045,” said Minister Yasonna.
In the efforts to support the creation of locally-made products, Universitas Indonesia (UI) contributes by inventing innovations that have a broad impact on society. Some of UI’s works were displayed at Patent Expo 2024 which was part of the series of events. UI, through the Directorate of Innovation and Science Techno Park (DISTP), displayed five licensed products, including the Degastab (UI and PT Innovation Material Metallurgy), Facial Implant (UI and PT Zenmed), 5GT Tonnage Steel Ship (UI and PT Tahop Antar Buana), KODC Dengue (UI and PT Konimex), and Covent-20 Ventilator (UI and CV Bartec Utama Mandiri).
In the seminar session, the Head of Sub-Directorate of Science Techno Park and Business Incubator of DISTP UI, Teguh Iman Santoso, S.T., M.T., introduced other UI products, such as the Puvicon Purifier, Sambiloto Extract Capsules, ERPO VIT, SETHOSOUL Psychosis Detection, and EXALTA Nutrient Power Bar. He added that as many as 7,736 UI products have been registered from 2015 to 2023. “UI commercialization cooperation partners reached 37 industries located all over Java. The product sales value shows a positive trend during 2018 to 2024 with a total revenue of 26.5 billion rupiah,” said Teguh.
In the forum that brought together inventors and investors, Teguh introduced the core value of UI innovation, namely demand pull, not Technology Push. UI offers two mechanisms for offering product development cooperation, namely product developer investors and non-product developer investors. These two mechanisms differ in the ownership of an exclusive license and the inclusion of the partner’s name in the intellectual property document which is only obtained by the product developer investor.
Other than UI products, Paten Expo 2024 also displayed other innovative products which constitute 40 patented products, 138 national geographical indication products, and 24 European Union geographical indication products. DJKI established 2024 as the Year of Geographical Indications in Indonesia. Geographical indications are signs to guarantee the originality of a product and its unique quality in relation to a certain region of origin. Until the beginning of 2024, as many as 144 geographical indications were registered and protected. In Indonesia, these geographical indication products range from coffee beans, spices, plantation and marine products, to unique handicrafts.
