Supporting UI’s Efforts to Continue to Increase Global Collaboration, FT Visits Top Universities in the UK

Universitas Indonesia (UI) continuously strives to improve N-Helix collaboration, both at the local and global levels. Global-level collaboration is especially collaboration done with renowned universities in a country. Strategic steps to develop international partnerships at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UI include identifying and mapping partner universities that have superior programs and research in accordance with the vision and mission of the faculty. The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, mentioned that with these strategic steps, FTUI not only opens new opportunities for students, but also strengthens its position in the international higher education arena.

“UI’s rank as the Best Engineering Campus in Indonesia based on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking (WUR) for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) also makes it easier for us to open up opportunities for international collaboration. This is in accordance with FTUI’s commitment to keep innovating and improving education and research quality for the sake of the advancement of science and technology, as well as to produce a positive impact for the progress and welfare of the public,” said Prof. Heri.

This ease of opening up opportunities for collaboration was proven when the FTUI delegation visited several leading universities in England, namely the University of Exeter, the University of Leeds, the University of Glasgow, and the University of Strathclyde. Led by the Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., FTUI delegation consists of the Manager of Partnership, Venture, and Alumni Relation, Dr.-Ing. Dalhar Susanto, and the Secretary of the Department of Civil Engineering, Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D, visited the partners on July 21-29, 2024.

During this visit, FTUI signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the University of Exeter with the aim to finish the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Double Degree programs with the scheme of 2+2 (2 years studying in UI and 2 years in partner University) for the Industrial Engineering study program, as well as the Single Degree program with the fee-paying study abroad scheme. In addition, this agreement also includes the development of research collaborations and other academic collaboration opportunities.

FTUI also signed the Agreement of Implementation (AoI) with the University of Strathclyde which offers a chance for FTUI students to join the Double Degree program with the 2+2 scheme for the Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering study programs. Students who have fulfilled the academic criteria in the last semester at the University of Strathclyde have a chance to continue to a master’s program which can be concluded in one year. The University of Strathclyde also offers a 15% cut in tuition for Double Degree and Single Degree students.

Prof. Yanuar said, “The signing of the agreement with the University of Exeter and the University of Strathclyde is a step to widen the academic opportunity of FTUI students. Other than opening up access to International-standard education, this agreement also gives more comprehensive and adequate overseas study support. In the future, we hope that this collaboration can continue and improve, both in academics and research.”

Other than these two agreements, FTUI delegations also made a visit to the University of Leeds and the University of Glasgow to discuss several cooperation aspects, including the development of Double Degree programs, monitoring, and evaluation of Double Degree Master students who have been running with the University of Leeds, as well as opportunities for research collaboration. FTUI is also targeting the University of Manchester to expand cooperation partners and review the potential for other international cooperation.
