UI Ranked 1st in Indonesia and 8th in Southeast Asia by Webometric, Top Position Since 2020

Apart from maintaining the number 1 position among universities in the country, Universitas Indonesia (UI) went up the ranks to number 8 in Southeast Asia based on the assessment of the global ranking agency Webometrics Ranking of World Universities July 2024 Edition. This achievement has become the best in the last five years. Since 2020, UI became the only university in Indonesia to enter the Top 10 in South East Asia in the Webometrics Ranking. In this edition, UI also ranks 103 in Asia and 540 globally from 31,000 higher education institutions worldwide.

Rector of UI, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D, said, “According to the Long-Term Development Plan during 2015-2035, UI attempts to be an advocator to solve national and international level challenges, with a target of entering top five best universities in South East Asia. UI’s rise in the Webometrics Ranking solidifies UI’s steps to achieve that position.” In addition, UI’s rise in ranking is a real step toward becoming a “Guru Bangsa” (National Teacher) and a leading institution in Asia.

Webometrics ranking done twice a year, in January and July, assesses website accuracy with university performance. In this case, universities’ websites are assessed whether they display information that is in accordance with academic excellence. For this reason, Webometrics sets three assessment indicators with their respective weights, namely visibility (50%), transparency (10%), and excellence (40%).

Visibility assesses the impact of website contents through several external networks (subnets) connected to the institutions’ website page (normalized and then the maximum value is selected). Transparency or openness sees the number of citations from the top 310 authors sourced from Google Scholar Profiles. Meanwhile, excellence or scholar looks at the number of scientific publication articles among the top 10% most cited from 27 disciplines with Scimago sources.

Using these three indicators, UI is judged based on teaching commitment, research results, international prestige, and the connection between the university and the public, including the industry and economic industries. If compared to Webometrics January 2024 edition, UI experiences an increase in ranking in the excellence indicator, namely from 1085 to 1000. Over the last five years, or a total of ten rankings, UI’s position keeps rising. This consistency shows UI’s commitment to supporting open-access initiatives towards scientific publications or other academic materials.

The Webometrics Ranking is held by the Cybermetric Lab, a research group owned by Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and also the largest public research body in Spain, not a ranking of university websites, but rather a university ranking that assesses several indicators, including research. Details of the ranking assessment can be accessed through the official page https://www.webometrics.info/en.
