Faculty of Humanities

The Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI), previously named the Faculty of Letters, Universitas Indonesia, was founded on October 1, 1940, under the Dutch name, Faculteit der Letteren en Wijsbegeerte (Faculty of Letters and Philosophy).

On February 2, 1950, the Indonesian Higher Education Center (BPTRI) was taken over by Indonesie (nee Nooduniversiteit) and changed its name to Universiteit van Indonesia.

Since 1954, the name has changed again to the Universitas Indonesia.

During its development, an idea emerged to change the name of the faculty to ‘The Faculty of Cultural Sciences.’ One reason is that the term ‘Literature’ is now experiencing a narrowing of meaning. In this case, literature is considered the work of writers, such as novels, short stories, poetry, or plays. Therefore, people tend to view the Faculty of Letters as a place to study literature or be trained as a literary writer, even though there are linguistics, history, philosophy, archeology, and libraries here.

Finally, the Faculty of Letters changed to the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) on June 27, 2002, with fifteen study programs and seven departments.
