Concluding The 2023 Kamaba Series with Insightful Messages

The 2023 New Student Activities (Kamaba) have been officially closed by the UI Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Badrul Munir, S.T., M.Eng.Sc. In the closing speech, Dr. Badrul Munir conveyed several messages to new UI students in 2023. First, focus on academics by completing a minimum of 24 credits over two semesters. However, in implementing the spirit of “books, parties, and love”, he explained that it is normal for new students to still have a great desire to play around in this early phase of campus life. Second, pay attention to each person’s personal health while studying with a regular diet and exercise as the benchmarks. Third, manage stress well. “We have 50,000 students and there will definitely be those who experience stress. In order for stress to be managed well, you only need to focus on things that you can control,” said Dr. Badrul Munir. This is in line with the key to a calm life introduced by Henry Manampiring through his book entitled “Terrace Philosophy” that life will become calmer when we focus on things that we inherently have control over.

Fourth, obey the rules that have been mutually agreed within Universitas Indonesia environment. Life will certainly feel easier when we follow existing procedures. Fifth, build good communication with lecturers and fellow students so that it will be easier to carry out the learning process in the future. Sixth, committed to preventing and handling sexual violence, both men and women have the same responsibility in creating a campus environment that is safe and conducive to the teaching and learning process. Seventh, build competence and achieve achievements according to each person’s interests and talents.

In the process of building self-competence, Dr. Badrul Munir also said “Opportunities to achieve achievements can be achieved through UKMs within the Universitas Indonesia,” he said. This is very important to convey considering that the UI UKM display was also held on the same day as the closing of Kamaba 2023. In closing his speech, Dr. Badrul Munir prayed for new students to be given health, intelligence, and competency strength to achieve achievements.

The event then continued with the Beam Safety Academy which was directly hosted by Hadi (FH UI 2021 student). This second series provided a systematic explanation regarding the procedures for using beam electric motors within the Universitas Indonesia. At the end of this session, the beam organizers distributed free vouchers to UI students who were able to answer questions regarding how to ride the beam correctly.

The appearance and display of UKM also colored the atmosphere at the closing of Kamaba 2023 with no less than 40 UKM throughout UI participated. One of the UKM that attracts the attention of new students is Sekar Widya Makara University of Indonesia (SWM UI). Jauza Khansa as Chair of SWM UI for the 2022-2023 period explained that the UKM focuses on the field of Javanese musical arts. However, Jauza explained that opportunities were wide open for students who were interested. “In fact, I myself am of Minang descent, so there is no need to worry because you will be taught the most basic things first.” Furthermore, Jauza explained that the process of accepting new members at SWM UI is very easy. It is an open recruitment, meaning that new students only need to fill in the form provided and then they can join this UKM. SWM UI’s activities are not only limited to internal education, but also carry out external education activities, such as teaching Javanese art to foreign students from South Korea.

Before the Kamaba 2023 event officially ended, many new students went around to the UKM booths available on the right side of the hall. Wening (FH 2023) expressed his desire to join AIESEC UI which is known for having a children’s teaching program on an international scale. Furthermore, Wening also mentioned that his background in frequently interacting with children in kindergarten near his house was his own motivation to join AIESEC UI. On the same occasion, Shou (FH 2023) has a great interest in the world of fashion so he plans to register for the UI Fashion Club. Even though he has never participated in a fashion week or similar event, Shou explained that this could be an opportunity for him to get to know more about the world of fashion.
