Conferment of Adjunct Professor Title to Japanese Radiation Oncologist Prof. Takahiro Oike

Universitas Indonesia (UI), through the Faculty of Medicine (FK), awarded the title of Adjunct Professor to Prof. Dr. Takahiro Oike, MD, Ph.D, Sp. Onk.Rad, a Japanese Radiation Oncology expert. The awarding of the title was carried out by the Dean of FKUI, Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, Sp.PD-KGEH, MMB., at a ceremony held on Monday, July 1, at the IMERI FKUI Hall, UI Salemba Campus, Jakarta.

“Prof. Oike is a renowned scientist in the field of Radiation Oncology. Today we are not only giving an award to Prof. Oike, but also celebrating the strengthening of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan in research and education. This teamwork will surely become a forum to exchange knowledge, ideas, and innovation between our institutions. Once more, we say congratulations and appreciation to Prof. Oike for the award achieved thanks to the skills and commitment displayed,” said Prof. Ari.

Furthermore, Prof. Oike has also made significant contributions to FKUI, especially to the Radiation Oncology Specialist Study Program. The contribution was in the form of guidance and transfer of knowledge to the teaching staff and students of the Radiation Oncology Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS). In addition, he also guides staff who are undergoing doctoral programs at Gunma University.

Prof. Oike has also guided the Radiation Oncology Sp1 students in the Basic Oncology and Radiobiology modules. Then, he also guided and collaborated in the preparation of a thesis or dissertation in the Radiation Oncology Sp1 Study Program, the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program, and the Medical Sciences Doctoral Program, at FKUI.

At the moment, Prof. Oike is working as the Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology, at Gunma University School of Medicine. His expertise includes Cancer Biology, Radiation, Oncology, Cancer Radiotherapy, and Carbon-Ion Heavy Particle Radiotherapy. He also did research related to Cancer Genomics and how genes are expressed and the interaction between different genes or genetic factors in tumors, especially in relation to radiation.

In this opportunity, Prof. Oike gave his inauguration speech, titled “Building Indonesia-Japan Alliance in Research and Education for Next Generation Radiation Therapy in Cancer Management.” His speech was related to the challenges modern Radiation Oncologists face in facing identity crisis.

At this moment, young Radiation Oncologists in Japan spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen to design high-precision radiation therapy, so this takes up a large portion of their work. However, 15 years ago, the largest proportion was actually spent with patients (bedside).

“In the future, many tasks, such as treatment decisions, contouring, planning, and daily irradiation will be taken over by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Therefore, we should have more time to meet patients face-to-face. We need to find the unmet needs of the patients’ suffering, bring them to the laboratory, and develop the latest innovations in oncology. The present is merely a transitional phase in the rapid evolution of radiotherapy,” said Prof. Oike.

Until now, Prof. Oike has succeeded in writing more than 100 scientific journals, with a majority of them published in peer-reviewed journals with Q1-Q2 rankings. Some of his research titles include Creatine-riboside is a cancer cell-derived metabolite associated with arginine auxotrophy (2022); DNA double-strand break repair pathway regulates PD-L1 expression in cancer cells (2017); and BRCA1 directs the repair Pathway to Homologous Recombination by Promoting 53BP1 Dephosphorylation (2017).

The title of Adjunct Professor is a prestigious award given to someone from foreign institutions excelling in certain fields and sharing their knowledge with FKUI, especially in a related department in the field of education and research. This award is hoped to become a bridge between two institutions to establish cooperation in research and education.
