Developing MSMEs Through the Internet of Things

HELPING IN DEVELOPING MSME BUSINESSES THROUGH THE INTERNET OF THINGS, UI STUDENT WIN 1ST IN MANAGEMENT COMPETITION 2023

Depok, November 17th 2023. As the backbone of the national economy, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) need the right form of information technology in order to continue to develop and compete in the digital era. The parameters for the success of an MSME in facing this competition require innovation, implementation, and evaluation strategies that are supported by a system that is able to accommodate and speed up the process of the determined strategy.

“Currently, MSMEs need encouragement and assistance in order to develop their business to be able to compete through the implementation of the Internet of Things (IOT). The roles of academics, government, and business actors themselves, which are summarized in the Triple Helix concept, can help bridge the process of implementing IoT in MSMEs,” said Ricky Aditya, who is a Master of Administrative Sciences student at the Faculty of Administrative Sciences (FIA), Universitas Indonesia (UI) at the Management Competition (Mancom) 2023 organized by UPN Veteran Jakarta.

According to him, the government has an important role in providing regulations and encouraging innovation initiatives. In relation to implementation, the government formulates regulations relating to the development of MSMEs, facilitates the promotion of MSME products, becomes a mediator for MSMEs for the private sector, and intensifies business capital assistance to implement various latest technologies.

Meanwhile, academics play a role in implementing IoT by conducting training programs on basic computer introductions, design for websites and packaging materials, digital promotion techniques, and improving the quality of raw materials. Meanwhile, the (private) business world is primarily present as a provider of funds through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in order to provide capital to MSMEs. This is done in order to implement smart production and digital business which are summarized in the IoT concept.

“The three of them are working together and it is hoped that it can run according to the planned program. Implementing the Internet of Things (IOT) program with the triple helix model concept saves time and costs, thus it will speed up the program for developing MSMEs in Indonesia, because the more the number of MSMEs that develop, the stability of the Indonesian economy will automatically get better,” said Ricky.

Thanks to his research entitled “Optimizing MSMEs through the Application of the Internet of Things Using the Triple Helix Model Approach”, Ricky won 1st place in the Mancom 2023 essay competition category. This competition was held from September 9th 2023 until November 9th 2023. In compiling his work, Ricky carried out various kinds of research ranging from journals to news. He admitted that this helped him to develop a background framework and also a theory for connecting triple helix variables.

“The challenge in participating in this competition is how I have to be able to divide my time between being a student and a worker. However, I continue to try as hard as possible, because I believe that effort will not betray the results. To be able to excel, there is no time or age limit. For this reason, everyone can achieve anything as long as they have the will and ambition,” said Ricky.
