Disaster Mitigation for Elementary School Students in Banyubiru, Pandeglang

Disaster Mitigation for Elementary School Students in Banyubiru, Pandeglang, from the Faculty of Nursing of UI

We send our deepest condolonces for the victims of the earthquake that happened in Cianjur Regency, West Java, yesterday afternoon (Monday, 21/11/2022). Natural events like this remind us to be vigilant because natural disasters can occur at any time, especially in disaster-prone areas. Pandeglang is one of the disaster-prone areas in Indonesia. Almost all types of natural disasters have the potential to occur in the area, for example earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis. That is why the understanding of disaster needs to be improved for local residents. Education about disasters needs to be provided as early as possible, especially for those who live in disaster-prone areas.

Hal tersebut mendasari Tim Pengabdian Masyarakat (Pengmas) Universitas Indonesia (UI) melaksanakan program yang berfokus pada edukasi bencana di SDN Banyubiru 2, Desa Banyubiru, Kabupaten Pandeglang, Banten, dipimpin oleh Dr. Tuti Nuraini, S.Kp., M.Biomed., Dosen Fakultas Ilmu Keperawatan Universitas Indonesia, bersama Ice Yulia Wardani, SKp., M.Kep. Sp.Kep.Ji.; Poppy Fitriyani, SKp., M.Kep., Sp.Kom.; Dr. Retno Lestari M.Si.; dan beberapa mahasiswa beserta alumni UI.

The program is expected to support the achievement of the 13th SDG on Climate Change Management and the 17th SDG on Partnership to Achieve the Goals. The method used is in the form of children’s games, which is snakes and ladders game called Ular Tangga Bencana. This large snake and ladder game is designed to contain specific information and questions about disasters in the game. Through this activity, students will learn about disaster while playing the game. Different from the usual snakes and ladders game, the pawns in this game are the players themselves so that the children will actively participate in the moves. “This is extraordinary, UI students and lecturers went to the field (SDN Banyubiru 2) to provide lessons on disaster mitigation.

Hopefully, this program can further increase children’s knowledge, especially regarding disasters,” said Haman Hafid, the teacher of SDN Banyubiru 2. The elementary school students enthusiastically participated in a modified snakes and ladders game to learn about disasters. The UI community service team hopes that the message given to elementary school students will be passed on to more school-age children. In addition, the message will be useful for them to deal with a disaster.
