PhysioMotion is an application to help health problems, especially physiotherapist patients, in doing exercises independently with the help of machine learning based on artificial intelligence (AI). Thanks to this application, students from Universitas Indonesia (UI) got the spotlight and won the People’s Choice Award at the international event at National University of Singapore (NUS) Medical Grand Challenge 2022.
As it is known, during the Covid-19 pandemic, physiotherapy patients had had difficulty in performing therapeutic exercises with physiotherapists. To overcome this, patients conducted online exercise sessions through WhatsApp video call feature which will then be guided by a physiotherapist.
With this background, UI students innovated to create FisioMotion application which aims to help the working mechanism of physiotherapists. By using this app, physiotherapists can also see the patients’ progress in recovery.
PhysioMotion was designed to be easy for users to operate. By opening the app, patients can see the schedule of exercises to be done. Then the patients can perform the exercise using the camera, and the system in this application will help correct them if there is a mistake in the patients’ movement.
One of the members of the FisioMotion team, a student of class 2019 of Fasilkom UI Darren Ngoh said that the problems that occur in health issues must be answered with current technological advances. “By utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in a pandemic situation like this, the limited mobilization of physiotherapy patients is very difficult. Because of this problem, actually what physiotherapists do in clinics or hospitals is only validating whether the patient’s movements are correct or wrong. From that opportunity, we try to apply AI with the aim of validating patient movements without having to go to the clinic. In addition, the users will also get real-time feedback in one application,” said Darren.
This international event was held online last August. FisioMotion application was a collaborative work of UI students across faculties, which are Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom), Faculty of Medicine (FK), Faculty of Administrative Sciences (FIA), and Vocational Education Program. The team consisted of Darren Ngoh (Fasilkom 2019), Indri Klarissa Ramadhanti (Fasilkom 2019), Rio Fernando Alexander (FIA 2022), Muhammad Mikail Athif Zhafir (FK 2019), and Alifia Azzahra Putri Satrio (Vocational 2019). Because it has entered the Covid-19 endemic phase, and so that PhysioMotion application can continue to be used and benefit physiotherapists and patients, the PhysioMotion Team has conducted research on several physiotherapists at Vocational UI. The PhysioMotion app is expected to reduce offline therapy queues and help more patients to recover. In one day, physiotherapists can only help 6-10 patients for therapy. However, with the help of PhysioMotion application, physiotherapists can monitor up to 20-25 therapy patients per day.
