Hana Fajrianti from FKM UI Wins 2024 Young Scientist Award

Hana Fajrianti, a student of Universitas Indonesia (UI) from the Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Masters Program, Faculty of Public Health, won 1st place in the Young Scientist Award competition at the 12th International Conference Working on Safety (WOS) 2024 held in Dresden, Germany, on September 24. The event was attended by 300 participants from 43 countries, with Hana being the only representative from Indonesia.

In the prestigious competition, Hana presented a study titled “Optimizing Subcontractor Selection Processes: Integrating Occupational Health and Safety Criteria in the Indonesian Construction Industry”. This study raises issues in the subcontractor selection process in Indonesia, where cost aspects are often prioritized over occupational safety, resulting in a high number of construction accidents in Indonesia.

“This study integrates K3 criteria into a two-stage process, namely prequalification (K3, technical, administrative) and qualification (price competition), which is very important to improve safety standards,” said Hana.

Hana’s research results show that 46.2% of subcontractors only meet 27.6% of the K3 criteria, while the other 40.3% meet 56.3% of the K3 criteria. Only 13.4% of subcontractors are fully compliant with safety standards. Hana found that limited resources and dependence on the main contractor are the main factors affecting subcontractor compliance with K3 standards. In addition, low contract values also reduce subcontractor awareness of safety criteria.

“After prequalification, the main contractor should help subcontractors improve K3 practices to meet SMK3 standards and ensure safety in all contract sizes,” she said.

In the judging process, Hana’s research was considered superior in various aspects, such as relevance to occupational safety issues, innovation, application benefits, and application capabilities in various contexts. Hana’s research received the highest score from the jury consisting of Prof. Thomas Behrens from DGUV Germany; Mary Ogungbeje from IOSH England; and Ing. Mag. Christian Schenk from Austrian Social Insurance for Occupational Risks, Austria.

The 2024 Young Scientist Award competition is part of The 12th International Conference Working on Safety initiated by German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), aiming to inspire the young generation who are enthusiastic about contributing to the field of occupational safety and health.

This achievement was welcomed with great pride by the Dean of FKM UI, Prof. Dr. Mondastri Korib Sudaryo, M.S., D.Sc. “Alhamdulillah wa Alhamdulillah, we are also happy for the brilliant achievement and make the faculty and university proud. We greatly hope that this achievement will inspire other FKM UI students to be more confident and persistent in presenting their best works on the international stage,” said Mondastri.

He emphasized the importance of this achievement in improving FKM UI’s reputation at the international level. “Superior FKM UI students will play a very important role as ambassadors for Indonesian public health sciences which will also strengthen the reputation and branding of the FKM UI institution, at the national and global levels,” said Prof. Mondastri.
