Depok, August 25th, 2023. Lecturers and teaching staff (tendik) at the Universitas Indonesia (UI) received a reduction in train ticket fares from PT Kereta Api Indonesia, Persero (PT KAI), namely a 10 percent discount for long-distance and medium-distance train tickets with executive, business, and economy classes. The ticket reduction is valid until July 2024, for academics who have registered on the Access by KAI mobile application. The event “Socialization of Reduction for UI Lecturers and Education Staff” was held on Wednesday (23/8), at the UI Convention Center, Depok Campus.
Head of UI Public Relations Bureau and Public Information Disclosure (KIP), Amelita Lusia MSi., CPR., said that this discount rate has been applied since July 2022. “Through this socialization, it is hoped that all lecturers and staff can understand the registration procedure to apply for ticket fare reduction, thus are able to maximize the benefits of offers from PT KAI,” she said.
In addition, the reductions that are offered increasingly encourage lecturers and students to use the rail as a mode of transportation when traveling. The majority of UI lecturers and students are train users, both for personal and group mobility. Thus, this program will support the government’s efforts to reduce the amount of carbon emissions amid worsening air pollution conditions. In addition, the train is the transportation mode with the lowest emission.
There is no limit to the number of ticket reductions used as long as the collaboration between UI and PT KAI is still valid. This fare discount does not apply to urban/commuter trains, special fares, promotional fares, as well as luxury, imperial, priority trains or other tourist trains.
Discount rates only apply to lecturers and students, but do not apply to the families of lecturers and students. To get discounted tickets, UI lecturers and staff previously had to register for PT KAI membership by downloading the Access by KAI application that is available on the Playstore and Appstore.
Director of Graduate Career Development and Alumni Relations UI, Ir. Ahmad Syafiq, M.Sc., Ph.D., said that the reduction in train ticket fares is a continuation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by UI and PT KAI last year. The collaboration between UI and PT KAI aims to improve the development of human resources education and training, review activities or development projects in railways, organize professional certification activities, and implement the Independent Learning-Independent Campus program within UI.
PT KAI’s Operations Area (Daop) 1 Jakarta Passenger Transport Marketing Manager, Rustono hopes that this collaboration can be continued and developed into other forms of cooperation. Meanwhile, PT KAI’s Manager of Group Customer and Support Service, Ade Kurnia Ayu said that UI was chosen in this collaboration because it is a top university in Indonesia that can become an academic influencer .
“Currently, transactions by UI’s academic community using the reduced rate have only reached 244 transactions. Hopefully this number continues to increase, and UI is able to influence its surroundings to use the train as a choice of transportation,” said Ade.
