Indonesian Vice President Gives Scientific Oration, UI Graduates 4,175 Graduates

Universitas Indonesia held an odd semester graduation for the 2020/2021 academic year, presenting the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, KH. Ma’ruf Amin and the Governor of the Indonesian National Resilience Institute Andi Widjajanto, on Friday (25/2) and Saturday (26/2). A total of 4,175 graduates are graduates of the Vocational Education Program, Undergraduate Regular Program, Parallel Class, International Class, Extension Class, Professional, Specialist, Masters and Doctoral Programs.

The virtual graduation ceremony was led by the Chancellor of Universitas Indonesia (UI) Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E, M.A, Ph.D. In his welcoming speech, Prof. Ari said that UI is committed and continues to realize its vision and mission as a leading campus, which is tolerant, inclusive, superior, and comfortable for all its academic citizens. “As one proof of the realization of this commitment, earlier this year we opened with good news from the world rating agency, Webomterics. Based on Webometrics’ assessment, Indonesia is ranked 1 (one) in Indonesia, 9th in Southeast Asia, and 649th in the world. We still have many challenges and opportunities to improve ourselves in order to improve UI’s position so that we are included in the top 5 in Southeast Asia,” said Prof. Ari.

In addition, UI made various breakthroughs to adapt quickly to various changes. In the 2021/2022 Even Semester, UI opened several new study programs. For the D4 level, the Vocational Education Program opens study programs in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Records and Archives Management, Creative Business, Media Production, and Tourism Business Management.

At the S1 level, Parallel classes are opened for the fields of study of Marine Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Interior Architecture. The master program opened a Disaster Management program at the School of Environmental Sciences, Medical Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and three new master programs at the Faculty of Engineering, namely Urban and Regional Planning, Materials Integrity Management, and Environmental Engineering.

“This dynamic has brought changes to the Universitas Indonesia, which is currently transforming from a traditional university to an entrepreneurial university. Entrepreneurial universities are becoming increasingly popular for research-oriented universities in the world,” said Prof. Ari.

In line with the breakthroughs made by UI, during the scientific oration of the virtual graduation ceremony on Saturday, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin said that the function of higher education is not only to prepare human capital individually, but has a crucial role for the prosperity of society and the nation. “Higher education is a determining factor for long-term economic growth, technological progress and increased practical skills. Higher education provides a stock of skills and competencies that increase labor productivity and this will encourage economic growth,” said Ma’ruf Amin.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the National Resilience Institute of the Republic of Indonesia Andi Widjajanto also gave a scientific oration at the virtual graduation on Friday, by raising the topic of the challenges that Indonesia will face on the way to 2045 Indonesia’s 100th anniversary. He said, Indonesia must be able to think comprehensively, complexly, and think holistically. Starting from strengthening democracy, strengthening economic growth, accelerating infrastructure distribution, taking advantage of the demographic bonus, modeling and transforming defense in the future, and most importantly how we strengthen strategic culture.

“This is where the important role of universities such as the Universitas Indonesia is to always carry out the Tri Dharma of education to make educational programs, research, studies conducted by universities able to prepare Indonesia to carry out major variable transformations, so that Indonesia is able to project its strength not only in the East Asia region but even in the global environment,” said Andi.

Virtual graduation in the Odd Semester 2021/2022, there were 30 people from the Vocational Education Program, from the Undergraduate Program there were 1,933 people, from the Professional Program there were 308 people, from the Specialist Program there were 304 graduates, from the Masters Program there were 1,478 graduates, and from the Doctoral Program there were 122 people. Overall, 1,460 graduates graduated cum laude from a total of 4,175 graduates or 35%. This year, the largest percentage of cum laude came from the master’s level, which reached 56%.
