The 2005 Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine tahun 2005, Prof. Barry James Marshall, visited Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (FKUI) to give guest lecture.
By the lecture titled “The Exciting Journal that Led to Nobel Prize and Latest Development”, Prof. Marshall told his experience with his research partner, J. Robin Warren when they were finding out cause and effect between helicobacter pylori bacterium infection and stomach ulcer and cancer.
They found out that helicobacter pylori bacterium is the cause of gastric disorder or stomach ulcer
Their finding broke th previous medical record that said gastric disorder or ulcer only caused by stress, spicy foods, and excessive consumption of food or drink that contains acid.
This finding became a new knowledge about the relation between helicobacter pylori bacterium and stomach cancer.
By these finding, Prof. Marshall got various award such as William Beaumont Prize from Amerika Gastroenterology Association, AH Heineken Prize from The Alfred Heineken Foundation, Amsterdam and of course, The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005.
He hopes that this research becomes the gateway of the other research related to this bacterium, so in the future, there will be preventive solution to inhibit the spread of this bacterium.
Besides Prof. Barry J. Marshall this guest lecture also present Prof. Bruce W.S. Robinson, MBBS, MD as the other speaker.
Prof. Robinson gave lecture about cancer treatment by immunity therapy, titled “The Recent Breakthrough in Cancer Therapy Using Immune Attack Strategies to Destroy Cancer”.
