Recently, Indonesian society has begun to adopt new ways to consume content. One of today’s more prestigious platforms is over-the-top (OTT), a streaming content service provider platform, available for access through various devices anytime and anywhere. According to Future of TV 2023 research, done by The Trade Desk, almost one-third of Indonesian people are fond of OTT streaming. In fact, these people spend, on average, 2.9 hours consuming OTT content every single day.
Looking at this phenomenon, the Media Production Study Program of the Vocational Education Program (PPV) of Universitas Indonesia (UI), held a collaborative community service event with one of Indonesia’s leading platforms, Vidio. This event, which was held in the Vocational Auditorium of Universitas Indonesia, introduced VIDIO’s Managing Director, Hermawan Sutanto, and the VP of Originals VIDIO, Diah Lasvita, as speakers, along with News Presenter of Liputan 6, Beverly Gunawan, as a guide, and the Head of the Media Production study program, Rangga Wiwesa, M.I.Kom., as the moderator. This community service event, organized together with the Media Production Student Association (HIMPRODIA), aims to educate participants about how OTT services work as a streaming service in Indonesia.
The first session began with Herman Sutanto as he presented his material, “Local OTT Streaming Hero: Beating Global Giants in Our Own Territory.” He explained the ‘race car’ growth framework that Vidio utilized as an OTT development strategy, namely growth engine (virality, collaboration, paid marketing, SEO, and sales); turbo boosts (hosting big events, marketing campaigns, sponsoring big events, and working with influencers); and lubricants (increasing activation, conversion, retention, and price). Hermawan stated, “Vidio continues to implement these three points to compete with other OTTs in Indonesia to provide interesting and enjoyable streaming services for consumers.”
In the second session, Dian Lasvita continues with her presentation, titled, “How Original Series are Conceived, Created, and Developed.” In this opportunity, Dian explained the creative process behind the making of Vidio’s original series, starting from the initial idea, scenario creation, casting, production, editing, and marketing. The idea for a story can be derived from Intellectual Property (IP), including films, books, soap operas, social media threads, and even original ideas, such as stories from our imagination or everyday life. Following that, the idea can be developed by designing the essence of the story, creating a synopsis, and building the plot until it eventually forms a script.
The production process starts with casting, then shooting, editing, and reviewing the final episode before it is released. Lastly, a teaser and a trailer will be launched before the series is officially released and marketed. “Every step Vidio takes can be a new insight for friends interested in making a short series,” said Dian.
This event was attended by over 300 participants, including high school students and UI PPV students majoring in Multimedia. Some of the participating high school students came from SMK Taman Siswa 1 Jakarta, SMAN 26 Jakarta, SMK Budi Luhur, SMAN 1 Depok, SMAI Al Azhar 19 Jakarta, SMAN 8 Jakarta, SMAN 61 Jakarta, SMAN 1 Bogor, SMK Paramitha 1, and SMKN 2 Cibinong. One of the students of SMAN 8 Jakarta, Sabir Adha Sofari, revealed how there was much insight gained from the community service event. “There are many new things that I have learned from the experts. This event encouraged me to deepen my understanding of the world of the creative media industry,” said Sabir.
