Leveraging Large Language Models for More Precise Decision Making in the Digital Era

Universitas Indonesia (UI) inaugurated Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Hendri Murfi, S.Si., M.Kom., as a Professor in Advanced Data Analytics in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), on Wednesday, January 8, at Balai Sidang, UI Depok Campus. The inauguration event was led by UI Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU. On that occasion, Prof. Hendri delivered a scientific speech titled “Penguatan Pengambilan Keputusan Berbasis Data dengan Model Pembelajaran Mesin dan Model Bahasa Besar di Era Ekonomi Digital Indonesia” (Strengthening Data-Based Decision Making with Machine Learning Models and Large Language Models in the Era of Indonesia’s Digital Economy).

In his speech, Prof. Hendri highlighted the important role of technology such as Machine Learning Models and Large Language Models in facing challenges and opportunities in various sectors, such as education, business, and industry. According to him, the development of this technology offers adaptive solutions based on data to answer the needs of society in the era of the digital economy. “This development is expected to further improve our capability in making data-based decisions in industry, business, and academic research,” he said.

As an academic, Prof. Hendri has contributed to various applied research, including in the fields of Actuarial Data Analytics and Text Data Analytics. One of his research results is the application of machine learning models in the insurance industry to improve the accuracy of risk analysis. He also developed a method to understand the public sentiment on social media and customer reviews through Generative AI technology, such as ChatGPT.

Furthermore, Prof. Hendri emphasized that mathematics as a basic science discipline has a strategic role in developing this technology. “As academics, we have a responsibility to ensure that the development of science and technology can become real solutions that provide benefits to stakeholders. We believe that with a spirit of innovation based on a solid scientific foundation, we can present relevant and sustainable solutions to the challenges of the digital economy era,” he said.

He also said that to answer the needs of industry and business, the higher education curriculum needs to continue to be adjusted to the latest scientific developments. “The preparation starts from a curriculum that is adaptive to scientific developments and the needs of stakeholders, as well as methods of delivering knowledge that encourage students to master the latest science and technology,” he said.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by a number of academic and professional figures, such as the Executive Director of the Society of Actuaries of Indonesia (PAI), Deddy M. Yoeshar, S.Si., S.Kom., CPLHI, ACS, QRGP, AAIJ., and the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Academic and Scientists Association (ASASI), Prof. Dr. apt. Elfahmi, M.Si., from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Prof. Hendri graduated with a Bachelor of Science from FMIPA UI in 1996. He continued his Masters in Computer Science at the same university and earned a Doctor of Science degree (Dr. rer. nat) in Machine Learning from Technische Universität Berlin in 2010. Until now, he has been actively publishing research in national and international journals, with several recent works, including BERT-Based Combination of Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Network for Indonesian Sentiment Analysis (2024), Sentiment Analysis for User Reviews in Gasoline Subsidy Applications (2024), Workers’ Compensation Using Tree and Neural Networks-Based Models (2024, and The Performance of BERT as Data Representation of Text Clustering (2022).

The inauguration of Prof. Hendri as the first Professor inaugurated by UI in 2025 emphasizes the important role of academics in driving innovation and presenting data-based solutions to challenges in the digital era.
