Prepare Students’s Knowledge & Soft Skills, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia’s Ranking Continues to Climb

During his four years as dean of the Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Medicine (FM), Professor Ari Fahrial Syam brought the faculty’s ranking to increase in QS Ranking Medicine. In fact, in the last two years, namely in 2020 and 2021, its ranking rose from 279 to 266 in the world. The improved position is part of what Ari Fahrial revealed in his presentation entitled “An advanced FM UI for the glory of Universitas Indonesia and Indonesia in the era of Entrepreneurial University” during the assessment of FM UI dean candidates last Friday.

He was re-elected as the dean of Faculty of Medicine for the period 2021 – 2025. This assessment process was carried out by UI Chancellor Prof. Ari Kuncoro, University Secretary dr. Agustin Kusumayati, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Abdul Haris, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Logistics Vita Silvira, Ak., MBA., CA., Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation drg. Nurtami, Ph.D., Sp, OF(K), and the Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and Assets Prof. Dedi Priadi.
Ari divided FM UI ‘s vision and mission into nine work program areas, namely, academics, research, student affairs, community service, human resources, finance, national cooperation, international cooperation, and law and governance. He feels optimistic that FM UI is the best place/choice for prospective students to become doctors in Indonesia.
With the tagline “I care, you care, we all care for a better Indonesia”, Ari conveyed FM UI ‘s vision plan, namely, realizing a faculty that is independent, superior, and able to solve the challenges of medicine and national and international health today in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic through the Academic Health System. He hopes that UI will progress in accordance with the Chancellor’s Strategic Plan, which is to develop UI into an independent university with good governance, towards excellence in Southeast Asia.  

Meanwhile, according to Ari, the mission is divided into six, namely to prepare students who are reliable in knowledge and soft skills so that they can compete on a national and international scale; strengthening basic, translational, operational, multicenter, and multinational medical and health research by utilizing all facilities – both teaching hospitals and optimizing IMERI; implementing the penta helix concept in various Faculty of Medicine’s activities; carry out community service; utilize the human resources, facilities, and infrastructure of Faculty of Medicine.
According to him, this gives confidence to the public that FM UI is a study center to complete medical education. Ari also strives for IMERI to receive support from the government such as the DKI Jakarta Regional Government and also several ministries and other government agencies through work programs that have been implemented during his leadership period in 2017-2021.  

n addition to increasing rankings in the QS World University Rankings in the Medicine category, there were several achievements and achievements of Faculty of Medicine during his leadership, namely, passing the National Competency Examination above 95%; increasing timely graduates of the Specialist Medical Education Program; increasing graduates of the Specialist Medical Education Program with cum laude predicate; increase in the number of Scopus publications; an increase in the number of Faculty of Medicine Patents; increase in the acquisition of Research Grants; an increase in the number of Copyrights; an increase in the number of Professors; MURI record for faculties with the most additions of professors in one year; MURI record for most faculties contributing resource persons in one radio program; and UI’s 2018 and 2021 Main Outstanding Students.
Ari Fahrial Syam, born in Jakarta, June 19, 1966, completed his elementary school education up to the Doctoral Program in the capital city of Jakarta. In 1999, he attended Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Molecular Biology, University of Queensland, Australia. In 2000, he completed his specialist education in Internal FM UI at FM UI and became a Consultant in Gastroenterology Hepatology from the PB-PAPDI Collegium in 2005.
In 2001, he earned a master’s degree from the Master of Molecular Biology University of Queensland, Australia. A year later, he completed the Biomedical Science Doctoral Program FM UI , Jakarta. In 2018, Ari was appointed as a Professor of Internal Medicine at FM UI .
Ari once held a position as Head of Puskesmas Tanjung, Kumpeh, Batang Hari. From there he returned to campus, then held various positions within the division, department, faculty, and finally dean of FM UI 2017-2021. When he was dean, he was also the Regional Ambassador of the Association of Academic Health Centers International Southeast Asia (AAHCI-SE), Deputy Chairperson I of AIPKI Center, and served as President of Asean Medical School Network 2018-2020.
There are 101 articles that are Ari’s work, registered in scopus with H-index 16. His activity in writing has led Ari to become editor of The Indonesian Journal of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Digestive Endoscopy (Journal Sinta 2), editor of foreign journals (Clinical Endoscopy, World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy), and managing editor of Acta Medica Indonesiana Magazine (journal Q3).
