President of World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, visited Universitas Indonesia (UI) to give public lecturer titled “Promoting opportunity and prosperity in East Asia”. This event was held at Senat Akademik room, Faculty of Medicine of UI, Salemba Jakarta.
In this event, Kim said that this time’s visit to Indonesia was to offer cooperation on health sector. “Two big problems on health in Indonesia are stunted toddler and maternal death on childbirth,” said him.
In his opinion, those health problems should be surmounted quickly because it is related to human resource quality in Indonesia that might give impact to the economy and competitiveness of Indonesia on a global level.
Besides speaking about cooperation on health sector, Kim also revealed World Bank’s interest to cooperate on energy, education, and maritime economy sectors. “From the meeting with President Joko Widodo, I saw that infrastructure development is a key in economy development in Indonesia,” explained him.
World Bank intended to provide loan for critical infrastructure development in Indonesia such as port, transportation, and projects in the field of energy. By this infrastructure development, Indonesia can create a more conducive business climate in order to attract more investor to invest in Indonesia.
In this event, Kim also appreciated Indonesia related to its economy power. He said that Indonesia has been proven survive through various global economic crisis, recover its economy in the middle of various natural disasters that happened, and reduced half of poverty rates in 15 years.
