In a series of events for the 13th Anniversary of the Faculty of Pharmacy (FF) of Universitas Indonesia (UI), as well as commemorating 59 years of pharmacy education, the Dean of FFUI, Prof. Dr. apt. Arry Yanuar, M.Si., delivered a scientific oration themed “Peran Sport Pharmacist dalam Pendampingan Atlet dan Masyarakat” (The Role of Sport Pharmacists in Assisting Athletes and the Community). He emphasized the importance of pharmacists in the world of sports, especially in preventing the misuse of supplements and drugs that can have fatal consequences for athletes’ health.
“Although Indonesia itself also has an Anti-Doping Agency, namely the Indonesia Anti-Doping Organization (IADO), pharmacists also have a big responsibility to provide education to athletes, coaches, and medical teams about the list of prohibited substances issued by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). They also play a role in raising awareness of the risks of doping that may occur due to the consumption of certain drugs or supplements,” said Prof. Arry.
He further said that a pharmacist can play an active role in preventing doping by providing anti-doping education to athletes and medical teams, providing consultation services on drugs and supplements that are safe for athletes, supervising and monitoring the drugs consumed, providing safe recovery guidance without using prohibited substances, using the expertise of pharmacists in bioanalytical analysis to detect the presence of doping substances in the athlete’s body, and joining the athlete’s medical team to ensure that the treatment given supports the principle of fair play.
“We also emphasize the importance of developing the field of sports pharmacy in the education environment. Some of the Tri Dharma efforts that we can do include adding elective courses and developing research related to pharmacy in the field of sports, developing supplement or cosmetic products related to sports that are safe for use by athletes, and community service activities can also be carried out, such as counseling at various sports events to increase awareness of doping and the importance of safe drug consumption, “said Prof. Arry.
Meanwhile, various achievements of FFUI in 2024 were also highlighted in this celebration. Among them are community service grant funds reaching more than Rp455,000,000 with fostered areas in Sumedang, Banten, South Jakarta, North Jakarta, and Bogor. Then, active cooperation with 59 partners resulted in a cooperation value of Rp2.85 billion.
In addition, a cooperation agreement was also established with PMDA Japan and the Indonesian Ministry of Health in the ASEAN-Japan Medical Devices Regulatory Training program funded by the Japan ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) with a total fund of more than IDR 5 billion. Prof. Arry said that this was the third time FFUI was trusted as the event organizer. Then, another achievement is the completion of the construction of the Cell Culture Laboratory equipped with sophisticated facilities, which is expected to be operational in late 2024 or early 2025.
“I am very proud of all the achievements that have been achieved throughout this year, which of course would not have been achieved without the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm of the entire academic community of the UI Faculty of Pharmacy. Next year and the years after, we must work together even harder to improve the quality and achievements that will be achieved,” said Prof. Arry.
