Sign Language Research Laboratory Ready for Collaborative Development

Universitas Indonesia (UI) is ready to establish cooperation with three universities in South Korea, namely Korea Nazarene University, Baek Seok University, and Kyung-In Women’s University. The cooperation was discussed during a visit by a UI delegation led by Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB), Dr. Bondan Kanumoyoso, S.S., M.Hum., to the three universities located in Cheonan City and Incheon, on May 21-26, 2024.

The cooperation between UI and the three universities will focus on providing quality education. With Nazarene University, the UI delegation proposed cooperation in developing a Sign Language Research Laboratory at UI Faculty of Arts, considering that the university specializes in disability education. Their collaboration could open up student exchange opportunities for deaf students, both online and offline.

UI also opens opportunities for student and lecturer exchanges with Baek Seok University because this university is one of the largest private universities in South Korea that collaborates with leading universities in the world. Meanwhile, with Kyung-In Women’s University, UI delegates offered to accept students from the university, especially through exchange and credit-earning programs.

In addition to exploring cooperation, during the visit, the UI delegation visited the Smart Farm at Korea Nazarene University, which develops several types of fruit, such as cucumber, melon, and strawberry, with an artificial intelligence (AI) database. The UI delegation also had the opportunity to attend the opening of the Cheonan K-Culture Expo 2024, which is a massive exposition of contemporary Korean culture worldwide, such as K-pop, K-drama, K-film, and K-culinary.

At the end of the visit, the UI delegation received a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will be signed by the UI Rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. On this cooperation, the Dean of FIB UI said, “We are very grateful to VOGO Group Korea for bridging wider relationships, especially between UI and various institutions in South Korea. The presence of UI reinforces the importance of expanding cooperation not only between universities and universities, but also between universities and industries in South Korea.”
