In the educational process, evaluation is an important element considering that the level of achievement of students reflects the learning process.
One form of this evaluation is through essay written tests.
The essay form is used to observe students’ higher order thinking skills (synthesis and analysis).
The essay form, which is quite often used by teachers, unfortunately has a weakness, because it takes longer to check the answers.
As a result, the evaluation process becomes ineffective and inefficient.
“I am interested in continuing to develop and expand the possibilities of the development of essay evaluation technology with CIT literacy, namely
Computational Thinking Coding,” said Anak Agung Putri Ratna when conveying about it in her professor’s inaugural speech “Evolution of Educational Technology Development in the Implementation of Essay Grading-Based Learning Evaluation Model as part of Education Transformation 4.0″ on Saturday (11/13).
She is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Universitas Indonesia (UI).
Dr. Ratna, who is currently UI’s Director of Education, explained that the rapid changes in education today prioritize technology to address weaknesses in the education system related to learning evaluation.
A method that can be applied in the essay grading mechanism is the mathematical Latent Semantic Analysis method, which extracts and represents sentences with mathematical or statistical calculations, on text with a large number of words.
The previous application of the automatic scoring model was based on the English language, and Ratna tried to apply this method to the Indonesian language under the name “SIMPLE-O”.
Based on the research, the method obtained quite high accuracy when compared to Human-Rater.
“With this research, especially the incorporation of an automatic assessment system with MLP(Multilayer Perceptron or basic form of artificial neural network) and PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization or optimization algorithm) models has been proven to increase the efficiency of one part of the education process, namely evaluation.
I hope this research can be refined better,” he said.
The inauguration of UI professors was broadcast live virtually through the Youtube channel of Universitas Indonesia and attended by invited guests, including Prof. Dr. Ir.
Mochamad Ashari, M.Eng.
(Rector and Professor of Sepuluh November Institute of Technology), Dr. Naoki Fukuta (Lecturer of Shizuoka University), Prof. Dr. Paulina Pannen, MLs.
(Head of Indonesia Cyber Education Institute), Prof. Dr. Eng.
Seinosuke Narita (Professor of Waseda University), and Prof. Dr. Eng.
Hironori Kasahara (Senior Executive Vice President and Professor of Waseda University).
Ratna is a permanent lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering UI.
She completed her bachelor’s and doctoral degrees at UI and master’s degree at Waseda University.
In 1986 and 2006, she completed her bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and doctoral degree in Engineering Science at UI, and 1990 in her master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Waseda University.
Some of Ratna’s scientific works in the study of computer and electrical systems regarding learning assessment systems have been published, including
GLSA Based Online Essay Grading System (2013), Dynamic Multi-Hop Routing Protocol for Unbalanced Sized Clusters in Wireless Sensor Network (2017), Parallel Processing Design of Latent Semantic Analysis Based Essay Grading System with OpenMP (2017), Performance Comparison of Text-Based Sentiment Analysis Using Reccurent Neural Network and Convolutional Neural Network (2017), and Word Level Auto-Correction for Latent Semantic Analysis Based Essay Grading System (2017).
