The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) of Universitas Indonesia (UI) Student Chapter (SC), with its 108 Faculty of Engineering (FT) UI students, managed to accomplish another international-level achievement by attaining the Presidential Award for Outstanding Student Chapters 2024 in the Technical Dissemination category. SPE UI SC became the only representative from Asia and the Middle East to secure an award in that category.
The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., gave his appreciation for this proud achievement, “SPE UI SC’s accomplishment in attaining the Presidential Award for Outstanding Student Chapters 2024 is a matter of great pride for the Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Indonesia. This award is proof of the teamwork and contribution of the members and the excellent guidance of the supervisors in improving technical competence through various technical dissemination activities,” he stated.
This achievement was announced on July 3, 2024, as one of the series of events at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. Amongst more than 450 SPE SC worldwide, SPE UI SC was chosen as one of the 23 best SPE SCs that received this award and the only holder of the label size F, namely SPE involving more than 1,000 participants in various activities.
The President of SPE UI SC, Muhammad Kahfi Arifansyah, expressed how this award is evidence of SPE’s commitment to increasing their technical competence and real contribution towards the energy, oil, and natural gas industry. This Presidential Award for Outstanding Student Chapter is said to be given to student chapters belonging to the top 10%, as well as meeting the per-category award and per-range requirements. The selection process involves submitting the yearly report and going through two file-selection steps, including regional and international selection.
This award constitutes five categories, namely Community Involvement; Engaging, Retaining, and Growing Membership; Operations and Planning; Professional Development; and Technical Dissemination. The Technical Dissemination category is a series of events to increase the members’ technical competence, which includes study tours, internships, scientific work competitions, team competitions, research programs, symposiums, and training courses.
From 2023 to 2024, SPE UI SC has carried out 64 work programs, with 47 focusing on technical dissemination. These activities involve 1,531 participants and consist of various activities, such as company visits to 14 energy, oil, and natural gas companies; and collaboration with multiple major companies for career development, such as the Schlumberger (SLM) and Baker Hughes annual recruitment.
“I hope that the SPE UI SC can continue being a pioneer in innovation and collaboration, as well as introduce programs that are beneficial and positively impactful to the members. We also hope that we can continue to gain achievements in international events, such as the PetroBowl Asia Pacific Regional Qualifier and Global Championship, bringing up the name and reputation of Universitas Indonesia in the global scene,” said Kahfi.
At the moment, SPE UI SC consists of 27 boards of directors and 81 student staff from various departments in FTUI, including Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, and Civil Engineering (International Program). SPE UI SC is under the supervision of two FTUI lecturers, Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, S.T., M.T., and Muhammad Ibadurrohman, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.
“In the future, the SPE UI SC team will continue fighting in the PetroBowl Asia Pacific Regional Qualifier, which will be held on July 25 to 27, 2024, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Furthermore, SPE UI SC will also participate in the Global Championship in New Orleans, USA, from September 24 to 27. Hopefully, SPE UI SC can give it their best and bring home the champion title again,” said Dr. Bambang.
