Depok, June 28th 2023. National Family Day, which is celebrated every June 29th, is a momentum for everyone to reflect on the values instilled in the family. According to a Lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Indonesia (FPsi UI) who is also Head of the Family Studies Research Group, Dr. Adriana S. Ginanjar, M.S., Psychologist, reflection on family values needs to be done as an effort to bring about resiliency in the family.
Resilience is a person’s ability to recover from crises and challenges encountered in life. Not only individuals, families also face very challenging experiences or crisis situations caused by various things. With family resilience, each family member can provide support for each other when problems occur. “In the past, we only thought that families should be harmonious, but over time, the concept of family has changed. Not only harmony, but also resilience,” said Dr. Adriana.
According to her, the family’s ability to adapt to changes and challenges is very important in today’s modern era. The family must have the capacity as a functional system to survive and recover from challenges, even rise to be stronger and have more resources and potential. Dr. Adriana added that developing good attachments, open communication, and support between family members will help children develop self-resilience both individually and as part of a family.
“Family resilience is needed in the modern era which is full of various challenges. Therefore, families need to develop various aspects and skills to build family resilience. Some of them are by thinking positively and optimistically, maintaining religious values and spirituality, adapting to various changes, and supporting each other in solving a problem,” said Dr. Adriana.
Family resilience is a holistic concept that outlines a system’s line of thought, starting from the quality of resource resilience, coping strategies , and appraisals. Family resilience is then seen as a process of adaptation to challenges for psychological well-being. This also confirms that family resilience is a continuum condition, that is, families can become more or less resilient depending on a particular situation.
In order to celebrate National Family Day, Dr. Adriana invites all Indonesian families to jointly strengthen resilience and create a resilient family. By prioritizing the values of togetherness, it is hoped that families in Indonesia will be strong and able to make a positive contribution to society and the nation. Happy National Family Day!
