Universitas Indonesia (UI) succeeded in maintaining its position as The Most Sustainable University in Indonesia according to UI GreenMetric 2023. UI was ranked 1st out of 145 universities in Indonesia that took part in this ranking. The announcement of the 2023 UI GreenMetric Rankings for the Indonesian country category was announced on Thursday (30/11), at the Unhas Hotel & Convention, Makassar. Meanwhile, the announcement of the 2023 UI GreenMetric rankings for the world level will be announced on Tuesday, December 5th 2023, at Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Plt. Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC, Ph.D., appreciated UI GreenMetric which has brought awareness to the university to create a green, comfortable and healthy campus for the academic community for 13 years. This ranking indirectly shows which universities care about the environment, both in terms of water conservation, energy conservation, and waste and environmental management.
“I am very happy since overall campuses in Indonesia have increasingly higher GreenMetric scores . This means that our campuses are becoming greener, energy independent, water efficient, and able to reduce and manage their waste better,” said Prof. Nizam.
The ranking carried out by UI GreenMetric is based on six criteria, namely Setting and Infrastructure (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste (18%), Water (10%), Transportation (10%), and Education and Research (18%). These six criteria have their own indicators to measure several things, such as the university’s zoning profile, level of green space, carbon footprint, transportation, water use, waste management, regulation and infrastructure, energy and climate change, as well as impactful education and research.
Head of UI GreenMetric, Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, M.,. M.Sc., said that in this year’s UI GreenMetric Service Package, many universities in Indonesia achieved very extraordinary ratings . “We see that changes regarding green and sustainable campuses are occurring in Indonesia. When conducting assessments and visits to various campuses, it was clear that what universities in Indonesia were doing was extraordinary. In fact, of the trees rating 1–5, there are many that reach 4.5.”
Several universities achieved trees rating of 4.5, namely UI, Diponegoro University, Gadjah Mada University, IPB University, Semarang State University, Sebelas Maret University, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, and Airlangga University. These universities are included in the 10 Best Sustainable Universities in Indonesia according to UI GreenMetric 2023. Apart from announcing the ranking of the best sustainable universities in Indonesia, UI GreenMetric also gave awards to five universities. The Most Sustainably Improved University in Indonesia award was given to the Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University of Malang. The Most Active University in UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Network–Indonesia was given to Raden Fatah State Islamic University, Palembang. The Most Sustainably Innovative University in Indonesia was awarded to Yogyakarta State University. The Best New Participating University in Indonesia was awarded to IAIN Metro Lampung. The Most Sustainable University in The Eastern Part of Indonesia award was given to Hasanuddin University.
Director General of Climate Change Control, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ir. Laksmi Dwanthi, MA, said that the contribution from the world of education, especially universities in implementing the Three Principles of Higher Education is an important and essential part of strengthening sustainable development efforts in Indonesia. Therefore, stakeholder cooperation and collaboration is needed to face the threats and impacts of climate change in the future.
