UI and Supply Chain Indonesia’s Commitment to Improving the Quality of Urban Logistics Transportation

The Faculty of Engineering (FT) of Universitas Indonesia (UI), in collaboration with Supply Chain Indonesia, held training to improve the basic competency of human resources (HR) in the field of urban freight transportation and city logistics. This training is specifically intended for urban freight transportation management personnel, along with the increasingly complex management of HR in this sector due to urbanization and the growth of large cities.

The training event was attended by several speakers, including Professors and researchers from the Department of Civil Engineering FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Nahry, M.T., and Prof. Dr. Ir. Sutanto Soehodho, M.Eng., as well as representatives of Supply Chain Indonesia, Dr. Zaroni CISCP, CFMP, CMILT, and Erlangga Bayu Setyawan, S.T., M.T., ESLog, CDDP.

Prof. Nahry explained, “Urban freight movement activities are growing rapidly due to urbanization, increasing income, and fragmentation of business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) supply chains. Globalization of production and markets, reduction of product life cycles, and development of digital technology and e-commerce also add pressure to urban supply chains and logistics.”

In this context, urban logistics systems and urban freight transport are expected to improve their productivity and quality while maintaining the sustainability of the city. Prof. Sutanto added that the urban logistics ecosystem involves two integrated roles: the public and private sectors. The private sector focuses on efficiency and cost reduction, while the public sector regulates logistics networks and land-use planning to reduce negative social and environmental impacts.

Dr. Zaroni highlighted that although various urban logistics solutions have been implemented in many countries, their success has varied. Many city governments copy solutions from other countries without considering local conditions, which shows the difficulty in integrating freight transport issues into strategic planning.

In Indonesia, the knowledge and awareness of city officials about urban freight transport are still lacking. Therefore, this training aims to improve their competence, which is expected to contribute to better management of the urban freight transport system.

Acting Dean of FTUI, Prof. Ir. Mahmud Sudibandriyo, MSc., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of this training in supporting the efficiency and effectiveness of goods distribution in major cities in Indonesia. The training, which was held on August 14, 2024, at the UI campus, covered materials related to city logistics systems and city transportation from a policy, technical, and commercial perspective. Participants consisted of 12 people from the Transportation Offices of various provinces/cities and the Jabodetabek Transportation Management Agency (BPTJ).

This training is planned to be held periodically and is expected to increase the knowledge and understanding of human resources managing city goods transportation regarding the science of goods transportation and logistics, which is an important foundation for their work.
