UI and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Ready to Increase Cooperation

Universitas Indonesia (UI) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) have agreed to collaborate in many aspects, including research, to improve the quality of science in both countries. This collaboration is based on the common vision of the two universities which are committed to becoming a center of science, technology, and culture that is superior and competitive for the creation of a quality world society.

UI’s research and innovation focus is motivated by five things: UI’s potential in health, science and technology, and social humanities; the 2017-2045 National Research Master Plan; Sustainable Development Goals; and the global Covid-19 pandemic. The preparation of the research and innovation focus is in accordance with the challenges and conditions of the problems faced nationally and globally.

Meanwhile, research at UKM seeks to contribute to economic and social development through an ecosystem that encourages intellectual discovery, innovation, dissemination, and application of knowledge. This research is developed by the five faculties at UKM, namely the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Economics and Management, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, and Faculty of Information Science and Technology.

During its visit to UI on Tuesday (20/9), UKM discussed potential research collaborations in various fields that could be developed with UI. The Head of the Transformation, Risk Management, and Monitoring and Evaluation Bureau, Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A, Ph.D. expressed his positive impression of this potential. “We really appreciate SMEs’ invitation to collaborate together. I am confident that today’s meeting can provide the best solution for our collaboration plan that can have an impact on efforts to solve global problems in the future,” said Vishnu.

At the meeting, the delegation from UKM was the Director, Center for Advanced Shaping and Professional Education, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohammad Bin Husin; Professor of Geopolitics and Electoral, Prof. Dr. Fuad Mat Jali; Chairman of the School of Development, Social and Development, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Associate Professor Dr. Lyndon novels; as well as several other representatives. Meanwhile, from UI, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Edmon Makarim, S.Kom., S.H., LL.M.; Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Relations, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M. Eng. Sc.; Head of the International Affairs Office, drg. Baiduri Widanarko, M. KKK, Ph.D.; Director of Academic Development and Learning Resources, Drs. Gatot Fatwanto Hertono, M.Sc., Ph.D.; Director of Cooperation, Dr. Toto Pranoto, S.E., M.M.; Head of Public Relations and KIP Bureau, Dra. Amelita Lusia, M.Sc.; and the Head of the Center for Independent Learning, F. Astha Ekadiyanto, S.T., M.Sc.

UKM hopes that collaboration with UI can increase research related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Through research collaboration, we also want to jointly resolve issues related to climate change, global warming, economic problems due to higher inflation, national security, and food security. I think this problem can be solved together through research collaboration between SME researchers and UI researchers,” said Prof. Fuad.

In addition to discussing research and publication of scopus indexed scientific journals, the meeting also discussed student and staff exchanges that can be carried out by both universities. UKM has 13 faculties for Undergraduate Programs and 12 faculties for Postgraduate Programs. In the future, students from UKM can continue their education in Indonesia because the study programs at UI are still in-line with UKM study programs. Vice versa, UI students can also study at UKM and UI staff can visit to share experiences about campus management and academic governance at each university.
