UI Campaigns for Suicide Prevention

Depok, September 25th 2023. World Health Organization (WHO) data reveals that in 2019, suicide was the fourth largest cause of death among people aged 15–29 years worldwide. Currently, WHO estimates that there are more than 700,000 cases of suicide every year. However, this figure does not represent the whole because some suicide cases are not reported.

As an effort to prevent suicide cases while commemorating World Suicide Prevention Day 2023, UniversitasIndonesia (UI) through the Makara Satellite Clinic held a webinar entitled “My friend wants to commit suicide, what should I do?”, on Friday (16/9). The webinar, which was broadcast live via the Instagram account @kliniksatelitui, presented two speakers, namely Anisa Mahdiya, S.Psi. and Aliyya Amanda S.Psi., who is a student of the Adult Clinical Psychology Professional Masters Education Program, UI Faculty of Psychology.

On that occasion, Anisa explained that someone who has the intention to commit suicide has verbal and non-verbal signs. Verbal signs are shown through self-blasphemous words or conversations that often discuss death. Nonverbal signs can be seen from their tendency to search for information about how to end their life via the internet, expressions of sadness expressed on social media, or withdrawal from any activities or hobbies.

In fact, at the most alarming levels, they can harm or injure themselves in various ways. They begin to prepare for death by preparing the funeral, giving favorite objects to other people, preparing personal letters containing farewell messages and apologies, and arranging final meeting schedules with those closest to them.

According to Anisa, serious efforts are needed from the surrounding environment to prevent suicide cases. “In conditions like this, it is advisable to accompany and listen to them. As best as possible we provide empathy and don’t make assumptions. Also pay attention to the surrounding environment, make sure it is conducive and keep them away from sharp objects. We can also offer help, direct people to professionals, and check the availability of psychological services at the nearest hospital,” she said.

Meanwhile, Aliyya said that there are things that must be avoided when we face someone who has the desire to end their life. Efforts that can be made are not to judge the person, not panic, and not promise anything to persuade him. Alliya also clarified information regarding myths circulating about suicide.

“Many people think that people who have suicidal thoughts are looking for attention. Many also think that the person is possessed, stressed, or disobedient to religion. There are also those who assume that women are more vulnerable to suicide. In fact, based on the facts, men have twice the risk of committing suicide than women,” said Aliyya.

Therefore, with this outreach, it is hoped that the audience will be able to gain understanding and guidance on how to deal with the situation when they find someone close to them who is at risk of committing suicide. Makara UI Satellite Clinic is ready to provide the necessary assistance and support, and invites the public not to hesitate to seek professional help if there are friends or family who are at risk of suicide.
