Universitas Indonesia (UI) is still the “Most Sustainable University in Indonesia” according to UI GreenMetric 2024. UI is ranked 1st out of a total of 183 participating universities—which has increased from the 145 universities of the previous year. This was conveyed by the Head of UI GreenMetric, Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, M.M., M.Sc., at the “Awarding Ceremony of The 2024 UI GreenMetric National University Ranking” held at Graha Sanusi, Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, on Tuesday, December 17.
According to Prof. Riri, this year, UI GreenMetric divided participating universities, both international and national, into three clusters based on the assessment results. At the national level, 35 universities are included in the Gold cluster, 48 universities are included in Silver, and 100 universities are included in Bronze. “At the end of the year, after conducting a performance analysis for six UI GreenMetric categories, namely Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education and Research, we saw many changes in the field of energy and climate change, this shows our progress in using renewable energy and climate action is relatively more and better,” she said.
Director General of Pollution and Environmental Damage Control, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ir. Sigit Reliantoro, M.Sc., said that UI GreenMetric reminds us that campus is not only a space for thinking, but also a place where real steps for sustainability begin. By assessing energy efficiency, waste management, and environmental education, this award connects universities around the world with one noble vision and mission, namely creating a greener, more balanced, and more hopeful future.
“Learning from UI GreenMetric, we will work together to create environmental metrics. For companies, we have the Company Performance Rating Assessment Program (PROPER), and we also have the Adipura Program for performance assessment in local governments. Perhaps the metrics we develop can be adjusted to the metrics used by UI GreenMetric. Hopefully, this step can encourage us to move more caringly, wiser, and braver in maintaining the environmental balance,” said Ir. Sigit.
In the 2024 UI GreenMetric ranking, UI obtained a total score of 9,050 with details of 1,350 in Setting and Infrastructure, 1,800 for Energy and Climate Change, 1,650 for Waste, 950 for Water, 1,500 for Transportation, and 1,800 for the Education and Research category. UI’s Director of Operations and Facility Maintenance, Dr. Dwi Marta Nurjaya, S.T, M.T., said that maintaining the best position in Indonesia is an extraordinary challenge for UI.
“This is quite a tough job. Since 2010, thank God our collaboration has paid off. Thank you to all high-ranking leaders and UI academics who have committed to preserving the environment on campus, especially the UI Depok Campus which has a fairly large urban forest area. At the world level, UI has also risen in rank from 24 to 21. Hopefully, our commitment to preserving the environment can continue to grow, so that the contributions made are beneficial for our future generations,” said Dr. Dwi Marta.
