UI Equips Postgraduate Students with the Importance of Ethics and Academic Integrity

New students of the Postgraduate Program at the Universitas Indonesia (UI) for the 2023/2024 Academic Year have started their lecture activities this week. To help the teaching and learning process run smoothly, previously, on Saturday (26/8), UI held a briefing by giving direction to all new students regarding things they should pay attention to. The event which was attended by 2,000 new students was held online via Zoom Meeting and broadcasted on UI’s Youtube channel.

UI Vice Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. rer. Nat. Abdul Haris, advised that new students make the best use of this study opportunity to reach their goals, broaden their horizons, and gain achievements in building a career. “This provision is important for the success of future studies. You are part of a more mature academic community to gain more in-depth knowledge,” said Prof. Harris.

Provision for students included five important points related to filling in student data, academic ethics and integrity, research policies, academic support facilities, as well as literacy and library support. These points were conveyed by speakers from UI, including Lecturer at the Faculty of Computer Science, Prof. Dr. Eng Wisnu Jatmiko, S.T., M.Kom .; Director of Research and Development, Munawar Khalil, S.Si., M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D.; Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Badrul Munir, S.T., M.Eng.Sc.; Head of Registration for Academic Affairs, Directorate of Education, Prof. Dr. Vivi Fauzia, M.Si.; Head of Learning Resources Sub-Directorate, Directorate of Learning Application Resources, T. Ahmad Danial, M.Kom .; and Library Services Coordinator, Dra. Kalarensi Naibaho, M.Hum.

On that occasion, students were advised to ensure that the data written on the SIAKNG page was valid and accurate. Some of the most important are the Population Identification Number (NIK) and the name that matches the KTP and diploma. Students must also pay attention to registration stages, academic status, evaluation of learning outcomes, and graduation requirements. If a new student intends to transfer credits, this can only be done in the first semester with a maximum weight of 50 percent of the credits being taken.

In addition to paying attention to the accuracy of the data, students were directed to take advantage of the various facilities that have been provided. Each student is provided with a single-sign-on (SSO) account to access various services at UI. This account must be kept confidential because it can be used to access various facilities, such as Microsoft 365 which has been subscribed to by UI, or other important links, such as dsti.ui.ac.id, idols.ui.ac.id, and ovis.ui.ac .id.

With this SSO account, students can also access collections and services in the UI Library. “Currently, the UI library is Indonesia’s largest customer in database collections. UI collections are mostly in the form of electronic or e-books and journals. All printed books in UI constitute six percent of UI’s total collection. All services in the UI library are carried out online, except for borrowing books,” said Kalarensi.

Several facilities that can be utilized by students at the UI Library include literature search services, document similarity checking, information literacy training, and research applications. Other physical facilities that students can use are the library plaza, discussion room, learning common, study room, and computer room. Especially for doctoral students, the UI library provides cubicle rooms.

The overall facilities provided by UI aim to support the implementation of education, research and community service programs. Even so, UI still emphasizes the ethics and academic integrity of every work produced by UI academics. Prof. Wisnu gave an example of using ChatGPT and its implications for education.

He said, “Now, there is generative AI that allows users to quickly generate new content based on various inputs. This is both dangerous and very useful. An example of a negative effect is the appearance of a deep fake.” Deep fake is a technology used for image or video manipulation. The manipulation techniques used in deep fakes are used to change images, either from the shape of faces, places, objects, or even sounds.

On the other hand, ChatGPT provides benefits because it can produce quality text, find research gaps and state of art literature, and is able to answer questions with a high degree of accuracy. In fact, ChatGPT has passed exams in several disciplines and has already obtained a license. Therefore, Prof. Wisnu advised, “Whatever the technology, we must maintain our basic skills, academic ethics, and conscience. Avoid fraud that can harm individuals, such as plagiarism, ghostwriting, editorial misconduct, scientific fraud, fabrication, falsification, conversely, and salami publications.”

In maintaining a conducive academic climate, UI also opened the Central Information and Public Services (SIPP) service as an information center, SIPDUGA UI as a general reporting service, and the UI PPKS Task Force as a sexual violence reporting service. UI also provides various scholarships for postgraduate students to support learning and research activities.
