UI Explores Cooperation in Medical Education with the Kingdom of Selangor

Depok, June 12th 2023. Universitas Indonesia welcomed the visit of the Kingdom of Selangor, Malaysia, at the University Administration Center (PAU), Depok Campus, West Java, on Monday (12/06/2023). The arrival of the delegation from Selangor was to explore opportunities for cooperation in the field of medical education. UI University Secretary, dr. Agustin Kusumayati, M.Sc., Ph.D., hoped that this meeting would result in wider cooperation between UI and the Kingdom of Selangor.

Deputy State Secretary for Selangor, Mr. Mohamad Zahri bin Samingon, said that his party chose UI as a partner because UI is the best higher education institution in Indonesia. “The Ministry of Education of Selangor is very focused on education, that’s why during today’s visit, we hope UI can provide opportunities for our children to continue their education in the Medical Education Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine. If this application is accepted, we will send the best sons and daughters of Selangor to study at UI through our scholarship scheme,” said M. Zahri.

Responding to this, dr. Agustin said, “It is an honor for us to have been trusted to be a place for prospective students to continue their education, especially in the Medical Education Study Program. This collaboration is very likely to be expanded because UI has study programs that provide international classes in several faculties, including the Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Computer Science, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, and Faculty of Engineering.”

Regarding medical education, every year the Faculty of Medicine accepts around 250 students from various entry pathways, which are then divided into regular classes and international classes. According to the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, Sp.PD-KGEH., MMB, for education in international programs, students will go through it within 6.5 years.

“Students attend preclinical for 3.5 years, then continue with study for 1 year at partner universities, namely Monash University, University of Melbourne, and University of Newcastle. Furthermore, students must complete 2 years of clinical education and take the Medical Profession Program Student Competency Examination (UKMPPD) as an absolute requirement to graduate as a doctor,” said Prof. Ari.

The discussion between the two parties continued by discussing the mechanism for selecting prospective new international class students and a description of the living expenses for prospective students who will study at UI.
