UI Had World’s Academician Discussed in Scholar Summit 2017

Universitas Indonesia (UI) held International Symposium called “UI Scholar Summit 2017” on
October 10 th to 11 th 2017 at UI Depok.
The event invited academician of famous higher education in the world in order to discuss
community problems in order to actualize Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The opening speech was delivered by Expert Staff of Ministry of Research, Technology and
Higher Education of Republic of Indonesia (RI), Prof. Paulina Pannen and Head of Research and
Development of Ministry of Communication and Information RI, Dr. Basuki Yusuf Iskandar
MA.
Besides that, Prof. Ali Ghufron as Directorate General of Research and Innovation of Ministry of
Research, Technology and Higher Education of RI also delivered the keynote speech.
One of the material that is delivered was urbanization and demography bonus that will faced by
Indonesia.
“Data showed that world will be getting urban. Society will be concentrated into the city. This is
not something that we can avoid. It is all about how can we take advantage of this situation,” said
him.
He also added that Indonesia demography bonus have to be the momentum of Indonesia to take
off by generating excellent and potential human resources.
By “Shaping the Better World” theme, UI Scholar Summit 2017 discussed three science cluster,
that are Health Science Cluster, Science and Technology Cluster, and Social and Humanities
Cluster
UI Scholar Summit 2017 is UI’s new innovation to meet academician and researchers across
sciences from all over the world in order to collaborate to give contribution for the world.
On health science cluster, attended Prof. dr. Nico P.E. Vermeuleen from Vrije University –
Netherlands and Dr. dr. Budi Wiweko, SpOG (k), MPH from Universitas Indonesia. Meanwhile
from Social and Humanities Cluster, Prof. Stephen Oppenheimer, Oxford University – England
and Prof. Jan De Goede, University of Lodz – Polands attended the summit.
On Science and Technology Cluster, attended Prof. Myung Hoon Sunwoo, Ajou University –
South Korea and Olivier Rukundo PhD, Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
In his greeting speech, UI Rector, Muhammad Anis, hoped that by the holding of this event,
internationalization spirit in UI would be escalated.

Recently, UI has expanded its wings by cooperating with more than 200 higher education in the
world, such as University of Tokyo, Leiden University, Maastrich University, Hanyang
University, Australian National University, Melbourne University, Oxford University, and
Cornell University
UI also actively participated in international network such as APRU (Association of Pacific Rim
Universities), AUN (ASEAN University Network),  and ASAIHL (The Association of Southeast
Asian Institute of Higher Learning).
