The Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Indonesia (UI) held free surgery and health education in the Seribu Islands Administrative Regency. This activity, which is a form of community service, was chaired by Dr. med. dr. Nyityasmono Tri Nugroho, Sp.B, Subsp.BVE(K). He said that limited access to adequate health facilities in the Seribu Islands causes the handling of health cases, especially those requiring surgery, to be often delayed. This results in health conditions worsening and becoming more difficult to handle.
In its implementation, the FKUI Pengmas Team collaborated with the Seribu Islands Regency Health Office, the Seribu Islands Regional Hospital, local health centers, Sumber Bumi Group, PT Triton Global Maritim, and PT B. Braun Medical Indonesia. The surgery was carried out on Saturday, November 23, at the Seribu Islands Regional Hospital and served 71 patients who came from Harapan Island, Kelapa Island, Panggang Island, and Pramuka Island. The medical procedures carried out included hernia surgery, removal of benign tumors, and circumcision.
“The enthusiastic atmosphere was especially evident in circumcision patients, where the patient’s family came in droves and even held a thanksgiving event as a form of gratitude. The warmth reflected how important this activity was for the community,” said Dr. med. dr. Nyityasmono.
He further said that the following day, November 24, the team conducted health education at the Karang Taruna Building on Panggang Island, attended by 37 members of the Karang Taruna. Participants received educational materials, such as basic life support, accident handling, burn handling, handling wild animal bites, and initial treatment for fractures.
“The event took place interactively with participants practicing the material directly using the props that had been provided. The enthusiasm of the participants was evident from their activeness in participating in simulations, asking questions, and discussing. As an appreciation, the most active participants were given prizes, adding to their enthusiasm during the activity,” said Dr. med. dr. Nyityasmono.
He added that there is no greater happiness than being able to share knowledge and real actions to improve the quality of life of the community. Through counseling that provides understanding and operations that bring hope, FKUI is present as a bridge of change toward a better life.
Together with Dr. med. dr. Nyityasmono, the FKUI Community Service Team consists of dr. Rizky Amaliah, Sp.B, Subsp.Ped(K); dr. Lam Sihardo, Sp.B, Subsp.BD(K); dr. Luther Holan Parasian N, Sp.An-TI; and 11 residents of the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) in Surgery and PPDS Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy FKUI.
Meanwhile, Robiah, who is one of the patients who underwent surgery, felt very grateful for the implementation of this activity. “Thank you to the FKUI Community Service Team who have come to bring hope and provide real solutions for our health. Your presence is a priceless blessing,” said Robiah.
Meanwhile, Khani Suryani, as the BoD of Sumber Bumi Group said that this activity brought enormous benefits to the local community. “Congratulations and success for the implementation of the community service event from FKUI. An event that is very beneficial for the community, especially the community in the Seribu Islands. Wishing you continued success, FKUI,” said Khani.
