Universitas Indonesia (UI) maintains its position as the only university in Indonesia that has successfully penetrated the 801–1000 ranking in the world rankings according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) 2025. This year, the ranking was achieved among 2,092 universities from 115 countries and regions all over the world, with UI also successfully occupying the first position in Indonesia and eighth in Southeast Asia.
THE WUR 2025 ranking uses a new methodology known as WUR 3.0, which measures university performance in five main areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook. Each of these areas is assessed based on 18 indicators that reflect the reputation, productivity, and impact of the institution concerned.
In the field of teaching, UI received an assessment weighting of 29.5% which was measured from various factors, such as the reputation of the lecturers, the ratio of staff to students, and institutional income. The research environment is given a weight of 29%, while the quality of research carries the largest weight of 30%, which is assessed from the strength and influence of the research conducted. In the areas of industrial involvement and international outlook, each received a weight of 4% and 7.5%.
UI’s improvement in THE WUR 2025 is not only seen in the score but also in the rankings in three main areas. In the field of teaching, UI rose from 198 to 194. Industrial involvement increased from 773 to 712, while in the international outlook, UI rose from 576 to 527. This is real evidence of quality improvement in various aspects, both in terms of teaching and industrial involvement.
UI Rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation for this achievement. “The increase in UI’s score and ranking in the five main areas of THE WUR 2025 assessment criteria is proof of UI’s seriousness in becoming the flag carrier of Indonesian education on the international stage. If this increase is carried out consistently, UI is optimistic that it can produce superior and globally competitive graduates,” said Prof. Ari.
Furthermore, Prof. Ari expressed his hope that this achievement would be a motivation for all UI academics to continue to innovate and strengthen UI’s position at the world level. “UI is committed to continuing to improve the quality of education, research, and community service, so that it can compete on the international stage and make a positive contribution to the nation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Acting University Secretary of UI, Vishnu Juwono said “UI’s achievement at THE WUR 2025 is a special moment. Because UI has won number 1 in Indonesia for five consecutive years”.
With this achievement, UI is increasingly optimistic about bringing positive changes and making real contributions to higher education, not only in Indonesia but also at the global level. UI’s success in THE World University Rankings 2025 is expected to be an inspiration for other universities in Indonesia to continue to improve their quality and compete at the world level.
