Depok, June 23rd 2023. Universitas Indonesia (UI) is still the best in Indonesia according to the Times Higher Education (THE) world higher education ranking agency. On Thursday (22/6), THE announced that UI was ranked 1 out of 18 universities in Indonesia participating in the THE Asia University Rankings 2023.
UI was included in the ranks of the best 251–300 universities out of a total of 669 universities from 31 regions in Asia. In addition, UI, together with the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, were ranked in the top 25 best universities in Southeast Asia.
Rector of Universitas Indonesia Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D expressed his appreciation to all UI academics who have contributed their efforts in internationalizing education. He said, “UI continues to improve its performance, because our target is to be the best in Southeast Asia. To make this happen, UI needs serious efforts and support from all academics, the spirit of collaboration with partners at the national and global levels, and making various breakthroughs.”
UI also received a nomination at THE Asia Awards 2023 for the Workplace of the Year category. The Head of the Transformation, Risk Management and Evaluation Monitoring (TREM) Bureau, Vishnu Juwono, who was also present at the THE Asia Summit in Hong Kong, said, “UI’s achievement for being nominated at THE Asia Awards for two consecutive years and maintaining the number 1 position in Indonesia for THE Asia Rankings, shows that UI is constantly transforming to continue surviving in the midst of increasingly fierce competition for Asian-level universities.”
THE Asia University Rankings 2023 uses the same 13 performance indicators as THE World University Rankings, but are still adjusted to reflect the attributes of institutions in Asia. The five main indicators seen in this ranking are Teaching, Research, Citations, International Outlook, and Industry Income .
When compared to last year, UI experienced an increase in its overall score, and excelled in the Teaching, Citations, and International Outlook indicators. For Teaching and International Outlook indicators, UI is the best of all universities in Indonesia.
This year is the 11th edition of THE Asia University Rankings. The number of participants increased compared to last year, namely 616 universities. Thirty-three countries participated in this event, with the most universities coming from Japan (117), China (95), India (75), Iran (65), and Turkey (61).
Of the total 669 universities participating in this ranking, the 5 best universities according to THE Asia University Rankings 2023 are respectively Tsinghua University, Peking University, National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong, and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
