Universitas Indonesia (UI) collaborated with PT Kimia Farma, PT Paragon Technology and Innovation, the East Kalimantan Health Service, and IMANI Care in holding Basic Life Support (BLS) training in the Aji Batara Agung Dewa Sakti (ABADI) Regional General Hospital Hall, Samboja, East Kalimantan. This training was held as a form of UI community service (pengmas) to increase the understanding and readiness of health workers and non-health workers around the National Capital Region (IKN), especially in medical emergency situations involving cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest.
The event of cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest is very life-threatening, plus if the person does not get quick and correct action, it will result in death. For this reason, this BLS training aims to provide participants with the skills needed to respond quickly, responsively, and effectively to this critical situation while waiting for medical assistance to arrive. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (2019), the death rate due to cardiovascular disease in Indonesia reached 651,481 people per year. In fact, heart disease is still the number one cause of death worldwide.
“This BLS training aims to provide skills to health workers and the community at the IKN Regional Community Health Center and Regional Hospital. This BLS training equips health workers and non-health workers to provide first aid if they encounter a cardiac arrest or cardiac arrest in a public place,” said Ns. La Ode Abd Rahman, S.Kep., MBA., Chair of the UI Community Service Team.
The activity, which was held from 30th of September 2023 to 1st of October 2023, was also attended by the Head of the General Personnel and Finance Section of ABADI Samboja Hospital, Dr. Yazid. There were 64 participants who took part in this training, consisting of 38 health workers and 26 non-health participants who came from Community Health Centers and Regional Hospitals around the IKN area.
In practice, participants received theoretical training as well as practical training which included emergency scenarios. BLS training by IMANI Care refers to the American Heart Association (AHA) Guideline 2015. The AHA Guideline 2015 is a guideline for emergency management of cardiac arrest which is widely referred to by emergency training institutions, and can be applied universally, both for the public and trained health workers.
“I feel happy to be able to take part in this training, because through this activity, I was able to improve my skills in providing first aid to patients in emergency situations,” said Murni, who is a health worker participant from the Samboja Community Health Center.
Meanwhile, Muroni, who is also a non-health worker participant, said that thanks to this community service activity, he became more knowledgeable and understanding in dealing with emergency situations in patients with cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest. “As an ambulance driver and admin staff, I feel helped by this training. I learned how to provide first aid to patients experiencing cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest. In the future, I hope that this activity will continue to be held for us non-health workers who work at the Puskesmas,” said Muroni.
