A student team from the Department of Chemical Engineering (DTK), Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), won second place in the prestigious 23rd PetroBowl Global Championship, which took place on September 23, 2024, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, United States. The four students from the 2021 batch are Al Azhari Siregar, Deni Suryo Pratama, Marley Susilo, and Vincent Emmanuel.
Their achievements received appreciation from Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, Dean of FTUI. “The achievements made by the UI PetroBowl Team 2024 are a source of pride that should be appreciated and become a source of inspiration. This success not only marks individual achievements, but is also the result of hard work and solid collaboration between team members,” said Prof. Heri.
He also added that this achievement proves that FTUI has great potential in producing young generations who are ready to compete internationally. “Amid increasingly tight challenges and competition, this achievement is a symbol of hope and motivation for other students to continue to innovate and achieve,” he said later.
Students supervised by Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, S.T., M.T., Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, FTUI, prepared themselves intensively. They received academic and strategic support that included an in-depth understanding of petroleum engineering to the latest trends in the oil and gas industry. This preparation process was one of the keys to their success.
Before reaching the final in New Orleans, the UI PetroBowl 2024 team showed an extraordinary performance at the PetroBowl Asia Pacific & Australia Regional Qualifier, which took place on July 25-27, 2024 in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. They managed to come out as the first winner in the regional qualification, which became a ticket to advance to the global competition.
At the PetroBowl Global Championship, they competed with 32 teams from six different regions, including the best teams from various countries. The competition, held by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), tested students’ knowledge of the energy industry in a quiz format, covering a variety of topics from technical aspects to current issues in the oil and gas sector.
One of the team members, Al Azhari Siregar, explained that the competition provided in-depth insight into the challenges and developments in the global energy industry. “Thus, this experience not only enriches our knowledge, but also trains critical thinking skills and the ability to work in a team, which are important provisions in the professional world,” said Azhari.
This extraordinary achievement places Universitas Indonesia as one of the leading educational institutions that is able to compete on the global stage, especially in the fields of engineering and energy.
