Depok, June 2nd 2023. Universitas Indonesia is included in the 20 best universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023. This year, UI also won the top 5 positions in Asia out of a total of 1,591 universities participating in this ranking based on the Sustainable Development Goals. UI succeeded in fulfilling the four established assessment indicators, namely research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.
According to the Rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., as a university that carries the name of the nation, UI’s academic community has proven capable of implementing the 17 SDGs agenda on a global scale. “The achievements in THE Impact Rankings 2023 are clear evidence of UI’s progress and contribution in the effort to create a prosperous society and environment at the global level,” said Prof. Ari.
This achievement was achieved thanks to UI’s contribution in several fields. In the field of research, UI is considered capable of studying research topics that are relevant to community needs and in line with the goals of the SDGs. Research that is relevant to the needs of the community is then encouraged to have a broad impact. UI also works with local, regional, national and international partners so that the range of utilization of the resulting innovative products can be wider.
In addition to impactful research, in terms of stewardship, UI maintains the quality of significant resources, both physical and other resources, such as staff, faculty and students. This effort is made so that UI continues to provide the best teaching, which is needed to play an important role in ensuring that there are many practitioners and alumni who apply the SDGs points in their work.
In this ranking, there are 17 SDGs points that are seen to evaluate university performance. The seventeen points are no poverty; zero hunger; good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; reduced inequalities; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action; life below water; life on land; peace, justice, and strong institutions; and partnerships for the goals.
Each SDG has three categories of metrics used to evaluate university performance. The three metrics are research metrics, continuous metrics, and evidence. The three of them will highlight the extent to which publication outputs are produced, how much the contributions made can have an impact, and how the university proves it.
