Depok, October 20th 2023. Universitas Indonesia (UI) Alumni Golf Association (Pergola) Youth Team won the championship in the “YouC1000 Golf Interleague 2023” competition organized by YOU C-1000, on 14th–15th of October 2023, at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club. This tournament aims to hone skills, foster competitive instincts, as well as look for young Indonesian golfers. In this tournament, the Pergola UI Youth Team won first place and was the best among 25 teams with a total of 100 golfers.
The Pergola UI Youth Team consisted of four players who are UI alumni and students. They are Andrew Harjanto (2019) and Ivan Aulia (2020) from the Faculty of Law; and Danendra Abyan (2019) and Bhagas Handoyo (2014) from the Faculty of Engineering. The four of them managed to qualify for the final round after previously passing the qualifying round which took place from June to September 2023.
During the qualifying round and grand final, Bhagas said that each player must remain focused and maintain their mentality when facing opponents. They were also required to maintain their physical condition because they have to play three matches, namely from the octofinal to the final, for two days in very hot weather.
According to him, the success achieved by the team cannot be separated from the role of the Pergola UI Trustees and Management. The coaches guide them, starting from technical preparation in the form of practice rounds and course management/game plans, to mental preparation in the form of motivation, sharing experiences and advice on match day. However, even though preparations were carried out carefully, the team admitted that they never had pressure to become champions.
“The coaches always say, ‘Just enjoy the game’. I think that’s what helped us to be able to play freely and be able to give our best abilities when competing,” said Bhagas.
The Pergola UI Youth Team was taught to enjoy and learn as much as possible from the match and put aside pressure. This is done so that the team gets maximum results. Apart from that, they are taught to be solid as a team. When one member experiences problems in the game, other colleagues must be able to compensate for mistakes and help each other, so that mutual trust will grow.
Thanks to this collaboration, the Pergola UI Youth Team managed to win the tournament. They hope that this victory can provide motivation to continue to make the name of the alma mater proud in other matches, and can encourage UI golfers to join and become part of Pergola UI.
After this competition, the Pergola UI Team took part in the next match, namely the Knockout Stage of the Jakarta Golf League, which will be held on October 18th 2023. The team will also take part in the HIMPUNI Tournament, which is a golf tournament participated in by state universities from all over Indonesia, and will try to defend the championship title in the tournament.
