UI Vocational Program Campaigns for Waste Free Movement on Panggang Island

Depok-Modern lifestyle pushes people’s needs for more things. This has an impact on increasing household waste, especially single-use items. Billions of tons of waste produced by humans cannot be decomposed or recycled. This also has an impact on marine pollution, including in the Kepulauan Seribu.

Zero waste based waste management is an effort that can be carried out in order to achieve sustainable development goals, as well as increase the attractiveness of tourist destinations in the archipelago which is inhabited by many tribes from this archipelago. Seeing these conditions, a team of lecturers from the Hospital Administration study program, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI), held a community service program (pengmas) entitled “Zero Waste-Based Processing of Household Waste” at the Pulau Panggang RPTRA Hall . The community service activities were carried out by Vocational UI lecturers, namely Supriadi, S.K.M., M.A.R.S.; Badra Al Aufa, S.K.M., M.K.M.; and Nia Murniati, S.K.M., M.K.M.

Supriadi, S.K.M., M.A.R.S., who is also Head of the Hospital Administration Study Program, said that problems related to waste, especially those from households, can be reduced in amount and utilized further. This effort supports environmental preservation, which is one of the goals of sustainable development. “Zero waste is a concept that invites people to use disposable products wisely in order to reduce the amount and impact of waste. The aim of this concept is so that waste does not end up in the Final Disposal Site (TPA), as well as to protect resources and preserve nature,” said Supriadi.

The application of zero waste is also useful for saving expenses, increasing use focusing on durable products, no food waste, improving health, supporting efforts to overcome global warming, and increasing creativity. One of the zero waste strategies is to not burn waste and not dump waste in landfills.

The Director of the UI Vocational Education Program, Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, supports the free waste movement carried out by the UI Vocational lecturers. According to him, the zero waste effort is one of the solutions in alleviating the problem of waste management. “I hope that this movement can continue to be carried out by the people of Panggang Island. Therefore, the campaign carried out by Vocational UI lecturers can be applied in their daily lives,” said Padang at the community service which was held on August 19th, 2023.
