UI Vocational Program Holds Scientific Writing Training for Teachers in Greater Jakarta

Depok, May 26th 2023. Publication of scientific articles is needed by lecturers and teachers, especially high school/vocational school teachers and equivalent level education. Regulation of the Minister of State for Empowerment of State Apparatus and Bureaucratic Reform Number 16 Year 2009 concerning Teacher Functional Positions and Credit Scores states that promotions to teacher positions or ranks are assessed from scientific publications.

Seeing this need, the Vocational Education Program carried out community service activities in the form of writing training and publication of scientific articles. The community service entitled “Training on Writing Tips and Publication of Scientific Articles for Teachers of High School/Vocational School/Equivalent” was held at the Vocational Auditorium, on Wednesday (17/05). According to the Manager of Vocational Research and Community Service at the Universitas Indonesia, Ari Nurfikri, S.K.M., M.M.R., this activity was initiated to encourage the birth of various scientific works from teachers.

This training, which was attended by more than 90 teachers throughout Greater Jakarta, aimed to improve the competence of teachers. As the speaker, the Accounting Study Program lecturer, Heri Yuliyanto, S.Si., M.Kom., explained several benefits of writing scientific articles. First, practice developing effective reading skills. Second, practice combining reading results from various sources. Third, introduce library activities. Fourth, improve the organization of facts or data clearly and systematically, as well as obtain intellectual satisfaction.

Apart from that, he also provided a number of tips for writing scientific papers. The first thing to do is choose a scientific article topic and determine an interesting title. To enrich the writing, he suggested that writers read more references and follow the guidelines for writing articles–manuscripts. Another thing to pay attention to is avoiding plagiarism and collaborating in writing.

Lecturer in the Media Production Study Program and Editor in Chief of the Applied Social Humanities Journal, Nailul Mona, M.I.Kom. who took part in this community service program stated that every teacher can carry out scientific publications in journals provided by the Vocational program in accordance with their respective fields. For teachers who want to do a scientific publication for the first time, Mona suggests that teachers find out the purpose and scope of what they want to write about. Then, they can follow the template of each journal. Next, follow the preparation guide of the journal you want to apply to.

The Vocational Education Program has several scientific journals from various fields, namely the Indonesian Vocational Journal (JVI, https://scholarhub.ui.ac.id/jvi/ ), Journal of Applied Social Humanities (JSHT, https://scholarhub.ui.ac .id/jsht/ ), Journal of Applied Business Administration (JABT, https://scholarhub.ui.ac.id/jabt/ ), Indonesian Journal of Applied Physiotherapy (JFTI, https://scholarhub.ui.ac.id/jfti / ), and Journal of Indonesian Tourism and Policy Studies (JITPS, https://scholarhub.ui.ac.id/jitps/ ).

Through this community service activity, high school/vocational school equivalent teachers will have richer information regarding the importance of writing scientific papers and will be interested in sending and publishing them to scientific journals in Vocational Schools. Yogi Setiawan, one of the teachers from SMA Hang Tuah 1 Jakarta, said, “I am very grateful to the UI Vocational program for organizing this activity. We received many things regarding how to write scientific articles and their publications.”

This community service activity was used by the Secretary of the Vocational Program, Dyah Safitri, S.IPI, M.Hum., to raise awareness about the acceptance of new students for Vocational Studies in 2023. She explained that the acceptance of new students for Vocational Studies can be done through various channels. “This year, Vocational School opened a new admission path for admitting new students, namely through the SNBP and SNBT routes. Apart from that, other admission path for new Vocational students are PPKB and SIMAK,” said Dyah.
