In the last five years, Universitas Indonesia (UI) has consistently ranked 1st in Indonesia according to the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR). This year, UI is again the best in Indonesia, ranking 484th in the world for research, innovation, and societal indicators. Not only that, UI’s sciences are also in the top ten in 19 fields of knowledge determined by SIR.
SIR 2025 noted that 7 UI sciences are ranked 1st in Indonesia, namely Economics, Econometrics and Finance; Engineering; Mathematics; Medicine; Physics and Astronomy; Psychology; and Social Sciences. Five other sciences are in the top 100 BRIICS, namely Arts and Humanities; Business, Management and Accounting; Dentistry; Physics and Astronomy; Social Sciences; and Economics, Econometrics and Finance. Meanwhile, the fields listed in the top 100 in Asia include Arts and Humanities; Business, Management and Accounting; Dentistry; Economics, Econometrics and Finance; and Social Sciences.
UI Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, appreciated the UI academic community for this achievement. According to him, the research and innovation of UI academics not only show the campus’s excellence, but also provide broad benefits to society. “One of UI’s excellences is shown through impactful research and innovation. For this reason, UI continues to encourage its academic community to collaborate with academic and industrial partners so that the research and innovation produced are in accordance with the needs of society,” said Prof. Heri.
In its assessment, the three indicators set by SIR have different percentages, namely research (50%), innovation (30%), and societal (20%). These indicators reflect the scientific, economic, and social characteristics of the institution. Through this method, SIR provides overall statistics of scientific publications and other institutional outputs, while also allowing comparisons between institutions of different sizes. Next, the assessment of all indicators is calculated and the resulting value is normalized on a scale of 0 to 100.
From the assessment, in all sectors, UI is ranked 13th for the overall percentile, 8th for the research percentile, 74th for the innovation percentile, and 5th for the societal percentile. At the university level, UI is ranked 10th in the overall percentile, 8th in the research percentile, 68th in the innovation percentile, and 5th in the societal percentile.
SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is a classification of academic and research-related institutions that are ranked based on a combination of three different indicators. The purpose of SIR is to provide a useful metric tool for institutions, policymakers, and research managers to analyze, evaluate, and improve the activities, outputs, and innovation results of an institution. In addition to universities, SIR also conducts rankings for four other sectors, namely Government, Health, Companies, and Non-Profit.
