The Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Dentistry Student Team won an award at the 8th Airlangga Dentistry Scientific Meeting (ADS Meeting) International Research Competition. The first place was won by Devin Hendrawan who is a student of class 2018, and the third place was won by a group of three students from class 2017, namely Karina Widya Aisya, Farih Aminah, and Yoses Rivano Bakara.
The Dean of Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Dentistry, Prof. Dr. M. F. Lindawati S. Kusdhany, welcomed her students’ victory, and appreciated the struggle of the students and supervisors in facing every challenge in the competition. “The international achievements that have been made by our students are certainly inseparable from the support of the supervisors and serious learning. I am very proud of the achievements of our students, hopefully in the future many more students will continue to be enthusiastic in various competitions,” he said.
in the competition themedAdvancing Dentistry Through a New Perspective“, the Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Dentistry student team presented a research entitled “Propolis Fluoride 10% Inhibits Streptococcus mutans and Veillonella parvula Dual-species Biofilm Growth and Alters Gene Expression” and “The Effect of Charcoal Toothpaste Brushing on Color Change and Surface Hardness of Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement“. The two studies explored two new treatments in dentistry, propolis fluoride and charcoal toothpaste.
“This study was conducted to find out the preventive effect of propolis fluoride as a varnish treatment (strengthening of the enamel layer) in dentistry. Through the preventive mechanism that we researched, we hope that propolis fluoride can be explore to be delevepoed as one of many treatment substances. varnish in Indonesia,” said Devin. In this research related to propolis, drg. Citra Fragrantia Theodorea, M.Sc., Ph.D and Prof. drg. Ariadna Adisattya Djais, M. Biomed., Ph.D acted as a student supervisor.
The second research is related to charcoal toothpaste, which studies the impact of using charcoal toothpaste on the whitening and surface hardness of Cementitious Ionomer Glass Modified Resin (SIKMR) material as an indicator of the long-term durability of the material. The results of this study open up many opportunities to further study the effectiveness of charcoal toothpaste which is claimed to be a whitening toothpaste.
For this research, Prof. Dr. drg. Ellyza Herda, M.Si and Dr. drg. Yosi Kusuma Eriwati, M.Si acted as the supervisor and companion of the student team. ADS Meeting is an annual scientific activity organized by the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Airlangga. This year, the ADS Meeting was held online with three branches of competition, namely public poster, literature review, and international research competition.
The assessment of this competition is based on several components, namely abstract assessment, presentation systematics, presentation, material understanding, innovation, and creativity. This achievement was announced last month, online through the Zoom Meeting app.
