Winning the Provincial Karate Championship, This UI Student Harmonizes Academic and Sports Achievements

Lutia Nurfadillah, a student of the Creative Business Study Program of the Vocational Education Program of Universitas Indonesia (UI), took home a silver medal at the Kejuaraan Sirkuit Karate Banten Seri 1 Piala Dandim Lebak 2024 (Banten Karate Circuit Championship Series 1, Lebak Dandim Cup 2024). Her victory was achieved in the U21 Senior Class Individual Kata category, on Saturday, July 134, at the La Tansa Multipurpose Building, Lebak, Banten.

The competition, organized by the Indonesian Karate-Do Institute (INKAI) of Lebak Regency and the Provincial Management (Pengprov) of the Indonesian Karate-Do Sports Federation (FORKI) of Banten, was attended by 30 contingents from Banten Province. In her preparation, Lutia has been training intensively since February. She routinely makes a weekly schedule according to the activities she is currently pursuing. “If I have a lot of assignments or campus activities, I will take a break from training at the dojo and choose to train at home. Usually, I train at the dojo every weekend,” said Lutia.

For her, this competition was her first experience of getting a silver medal after intense training and achieving a brown belt (chao obi). After passing the preliminary round, Lutia continued her steps to the final round and managed to win second place.

“Of course, this competition was my first memorable match experience. Especially because the opponents I competed with almost all played high-level kata. So, I needed a strong strategy and endurance during the match,” said Lutia.

Lutia said that after the competition, she would continue to pursue the world of karate. In fact, she will try to join the kumite branch competition. “The achievements that I have earned so far have motivated me to continue to excel. Learning from this experience also makes me want to develop self-defense in kumite. Hopefully, I can once again bring honor to UI’s alma mater in karate,” said Lutia.

The Director of the Vocational Education Program UI, Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, expressed his pride in Lutia’s achievements. According to him, UI Vocational students have diverse potentials, both in academic and non-academic fields. Starting from academic competitions, such as business plans, marketing plans, or political debates, as well as non-academic, such as sports competitions, arts, and others.

“I invite other students to continue to excel and work according to their respective talents. These achievements are not only for themselves, but also to bring honor to their families, campuses, and countries. In addition, UI Vocational also continues to support other activities carried out by students, especially to provide a real impact on the wider community,” said Padang.
